    8psk

    ADVERTS 1
Any receivers out there that do 8PSK?
The Pansat 3500S is great but lacks this feature. I thought maybe one of the Nokia's would handle all encoding schemes, but I don't believe it tackles this issue either.

So what is everyone running to get 8PSK?

    Welcome to SatGuys :)

No one is running anything to get 8psk... other than a 6000 8psk moduel. But those are in short supply. There is nothing publically avabile for 8psk and there is a long line of people wating. If you find something that I havent found please pm me as im looking for an 8psk card too.. I think something should break within the next year for 8psk devices or dvb S2.. Cant wait. I know there are also some units in beta testing right now.

I think what he's refering to is a special usb adapter that was made by Rod Hewitt that could be used to connect one of those tuning modules to a PC. However, those were limited preproduction items that were only available from Rod for a limited time and are no longer available now. Also if I'm not mistaken the units were limited as far as symbol rate goes and were not capable of recieving higher symbol rate signals. Furthermore, I believe there are 2 different types of 8psk, turbo and trellis and this unit could only work with one of those. So, the bottom line is if you don't already have one of these there's little chance to obtain one and even if you do obtain one you may not be able to recieve all 8psk signals with it and that's not even taking into account the fact that many 8psk signals may be encrypted.

As for recievers that can handle 8psk, sure they exist. Otherwise noone would be broadcasting using 8psk. However, these recievers are not readily available to the general public and even if you can find a way to obtain one expect a 4 or perhaps even 5 figure price tag. Also my understanding is that reliable recpetion of 8psk signals requires a high quality LNB and a much larger dish (12-15Ft. at least). I believe 8psk provides higher bandwidth with a smaller piece of the spectrum. This is the reason some networks have swtiched to it (or are planning to) for their HD feeds. However, the price that must be paid for that is tighter signal constraints which means you must get a much higher quality signal to get a lock. For a network affiliate having a 25Ft dish in their backyard is no problem but for most of us hobbiest it might be.

You have to have more than just the 6000 8psk module. That's just the tuner. You also have to have the interface board that Rod sold which connects between the tuner module and your computer. If I remember correctly he sold them for $299, but he only had a very limited number of them and I don't believe he's selling them anymore. Also, you'll of course need to purchase a copy of Tsreader as it's the only software that works with the board. So youd be looking to spend at least $400 not counting the price of the 6000 8psk module and that's assuming you can convince Rod to go back and build another one just for you.

You are correct sir....Last I heard one would cost in the range of $2000 +. Not even sure where to get one, even if I had the money.
