Happy New Year Teachsac and all,
If anyone is interested in advising on my BD55 hook up challenge, the problem and what I had done to that time is described in post #291

oops, did not mean to 'send' yet...
Post #291 (yesterday 9:15pm) describes the problem and hook ups I tried to make it work (no sound).
I just woke from a nap trying to get a clear head to 'go back in' (well behind anyway)
. First, some manual studying to see if today I can make sense of it.

Ok. So you are using an optical cable am I correct? If so, turn HDMI audio off in the setup menu of the player and turn secondary audio on. Set the DD and DTS output to bitstream. LEt me know. Also, did you assign the inout in the receiver? Always gotta ask.

Firmware update done too.
Since we could not watch our movie, I took a pause in our 'attempts' and ran the firmware update from ver. 1.2 to 1.6. Doouuh, no help to my 'issue'.

Firmware shouldn't make a difference.

Well, I currently have the optical cable from BD to AVR, and component video from BD to TV. This did give me sound. But I must be cutting myself short on the AQ and VQ I should be getting if I could get the 5.1 audio cable set from BD to AVR and HDMI BD to TV to produce sound.
I think you hit the point on 'assigning input' on receiver. I have not been able to see anything in the AVR set up menu on assigning the 5.1 audio input as the source for BD. In fact, the AVR display was showing 'two spkr input' last night when I was last messing with it. I'm back tonight to try again.
Any hints on how to assign 5.1 cables as source for BD?
Thanks for the help Teachsac.

IN BD55 manual pg 13 , 'F' "Connecting to 5.1ch Audio Out" seems to me to say turn 'HDMI Audio Output' OFF when "connecting AVR with HDMI AV Out terminal." In all my configurations with HDMI cable and 5.1 cables, I have had HDMI turned OFF.

My AVR is still the Sony STR-V333ES (non HDMI) until mid to late next week

Everything sounds right with the 55 setup, so you will need to go into the setup menu of the receiver. I'm not familiar with the Sony's but Denon, Onkyo, Yamaha, etc. all have an option in the menu for analog or multichannel. Many receivers will also let you toggle through sound fields either on the fron control panel or the remote. One of them is usually MC.
