Mediaware scores US deal
ADVERTS 1
Canberra-based digital video technology developer Mediaware has secured a deal with Time Warner Cable, the Australian company's chief executive Chris Newell said in a statement today.
Under the deal, Mediaware will provide the software for the US firm's Start Over service which lets viewers pause and re-wind live TV and restart programs already in progress so long as they tune in before the show finishes.
Start Over was launched on November 1 to an initial market of 10,000 users. A further 137,000 users will be able to use the service in the next few months.
Mediaware already supplies technology to US-based video-on-demand service providers Tandberg Television, N2 Broadband, Gotuit Media, and IMake.
Internode upgrades network
Adelaide-based national broadband provider Internode will complete an upgrade to its network by the end of the year to ensure that it has the capacity to carry video, voice and data traffic.
In a statement, chief executive Simon Hackett said existing inter-capital internet links would be increased from the existing 155 Megabits per second to dual 622 Megabits per second links.
International links would be increased by adding two 155Mbps links to the capacity provided by Southern Cross Network.
The upgrade involves the deployment of carrier-grade Synchronous Digital Hierarchy telecommunications infrastructure. SDH is an international standard for synchronous data transmission over fibre optic cables.

Mediaware and Time Warner Cable Launches VOD Service
(November 21, 2005) Mediaware, a leading global developer of digital video technology for the broadcast sector, announced today that its digital video editing and processing technology has been successfully implemented as part of the launch of Time Warner Cable¹s Start Over service, a video-on-demand offering.
Time Warner launched Start Over on November 1st on a limited basis to 10,000 customers in a South Carolina test market. The company intends to roll out the service to 137,000 customers in South Carolina in the coming months, and will expand the service nationally next year. The Start Over service enables digital cable customers to pause and rewind live TV, as well as allowing them to restart shows which are already in progress. Unlike other services, the ³Start Over² service does not require the purchase of additional hardware or software.
We are pleased to be a part of such an important project with Time Warner. This service has the potential to re-shape how people watch TV, and our technology is a critical enabler of its successful deployment, Mediaware CEO Chris Newell commented. Video on Demand is an increasingly important market for us, and as Start Over rolls out nationwide, we expect to see significant revenue growth from this project, as well as other VOD efforts. In addition to the partnership with Time Warner, Mediaware also supplies technology and systems to other customers with video-on-demand services, such as Tandberg Television , N2 Broadband, Gotuit Media, and IMake.
