So after watching this premier episode I am not sure if I will continue to watch. I don't care how many critics love the gritty look and the disconnected stories. I just don't connect with series that make you want to shoot yourself from depression after you watch the episode.
All three major crimes these cops investgated were solved within their shift and all three in completely unlikely ways. A rookie cop on his first day draws and kills a suspect when the scene is loaded with veteran cops. And the thing that drives me nuts: the ending music video. To me a series episode with an ending music video tells me the episode was streched because the script was "short".
I will not give up on the series, but three times during this premier episode I found myself reaching for the remote. I forced myself to give the show a complete chance.

I'll give it one more week. I was hoping it would branch out from the hundreds of other cop shows already out there. So far it hasn't.

Proud Staff MemberFriday night is usually where weak shows go to die. The 13 episode order (instead of a full season) is another sign that NBC isn't very confident of the show's success on a Friday.
I watched last week's episode while doing other things and really couldn't tell you what happened, and this week's show is still on my DVR unwatched. I may get to it eventually.
Southland is no replacement to the typical NBC "must watch TV" Thursday nights. ER, LA Law, St. Elsewhere. But Leno is going to kill the streak anyway with his daily 10pm show.
