    SA8300HD clipping HD shows

I have BHN's HD DVR, the SA8300HD. The hardware seems nice enough, but the software/GUI is a pile of crap. For the most part, however, it is stable enough and does what it is supposed to do.

Recently, this has changed. HD shows are being clipped by a minute or so; sometimes more. I don't think this is a TV network thing since the equivalent SD shows aren't clipped. (Yes, it's forcing me to record both HD and SD. ) BHN's clock could be off, I suppose.

Last night was the last straw. I was watching the execrable Bulls game (on SD EPSN since BHN charges for the HD version of the same channel ) so I only recorded the HD version of CSI--and lost the last 2 minutes of it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it just me? Was the CBS feed off?

The wife is actually entertaining discussions of DirecTV.

I'm entertaining fantasies of smashing the 8300 with the case of an old TiVo Series 1 (as a melee weapon)... but then BHN would probably charge me a "maniac fee" on top of the equipment replacement.

Are you in Tampa or Orlando or where? In Orlando we use the Passport Software and I like it well enough.

Why would it force you to record both channels that makes 0 sense. Time to replace the box I think. (Although I think you mean you are setting it to record both, so you dont miss anything)

ESPN charges BHN for ESPNHD and ESPN, thats why BHN charges you for both.. ESPN doesn't give the HD channel for free neither does BHN. You anger for that problem is directed at the wrong people, also note they are not the exact same channel. Sometimes ESPN HD has different programming then ESPN.

I think first id get a new box, It could be possible the harddrive is on the verge of failure or its internal clock is just screwed up. Try swapping the box its your best bet to fix your problem.

I have the 8300 in the Tampa market and the only time I ever get cut off on an HD recording is when the channel runs over the time slot. They do this intentionally I'm sure to get live watchers not to change the channel and probably to annoy people DVR'ing and skipping the ads. You can set a manual recording and add a few minutes to the end to be on the safe side. With the shows I watch it is usually just the credits that get cut off. I understand your frustration... but just add a few minutes to the recording to be sure.

    Who does it intentionally ?

Not sure about Tampa but in Orlando Market with the Passprot software whenever you a recording on a live event (ie: sports games etc) a new menu pops up now asking if you want to "extend" the recording past the end time, I usually always do the 30mins extra for a sports game, id hate to miss the ending!

The OTA networks commonly go beyond the exact o'clock with shows. Example, Trump's Apprentice show ending at 3 minutes after the hour and the next show starting at 3 minutes after instead of :00. If you are watching the show live, you are now into the hour and if you switched channels, another channel may have started at the :00, you've missed part of your next show. This is very common practice with the networks. I am thinking part of the reason they do this is to piss off DVRers. "That will teach you to DVR the show and fast forward the ads. You just sat through an hour of a show and missed the last two minutes because we ran over the hour and you only DVR'd what the guide said." They also do this to lead into the next show and hook you. NBC is pretty bad about this. I also hate how they say, "More My Name is Earl to come" and you ff the ads and it is just the credits. I hate it! Damn commercials and network TV!

If it is important, manually record extra.

I don't record live sports, since half the fun is watching it as it happens, and if I miss it, I miss it... but I don't think we have that in Tampa. I have recorded live events other than sports and never seen the pop up you speak of. Good idea though. I could be wrong and just never noticed it. Maybe it should offer the extend of recording on everything the networks run.
