Extend phone line from cable modem to another room

How can I extend phone line from cable modem to another room? Situation is I am not always in same place in the house so I am thinking of extending the phone line from the cable modem to a different room. I have different brand of handsets.

Does doing this even legal?

Yes it is 100% legal. Why not the just put the handset's base in the same room as the EMTA?

What is EMTA? I plan on using a corded phone on the other room. I just feel more comfortable using a corded phone while on a call. How do I "split" the phone cable without affecting the signal or voice quality?

It is a modem that provides data and voice in one unit. Using one of these should work fine.
