Granted, the vast majority of improvements have been made in the digital arena but there is no mistaking that Dolby Pro Logic is true surround.
D'oh! I keep forgetting about the PL2 stuff, that's one disadvantage of having an older AV receiver. I forgot the PL2 processing can now get a LFE channel out of analog stereo source material.

In addition to the LFE channel, PLII also gives 2 full range surround channels, whereas PL gives a limited range matrixed channel to the surrounds.

PL is 4.0 - left, center, right, matrixed surround, PLII is true 5.1.

Guys...here is what I wound up with. The folks at this place are GREAT and got back to me asap via email. I will certainly be back to them in the future.

2412 HDMI Cable male to male 28AWG - 6ft w/Ferrite Cores (Gold Plated)
    2
    $4.37
    $8.74
3396 PREMIUM 1.5FT Optical Toslink 8.0mm Cable w/ Metal Fancy Connector
    1
    $3.36
    $3.36
    2743 Digital Coaxial Audio RCA Cable M/M RG59U 75ohm S/PDIF Subwoofer - 3ft
    1
    $2.70
    $2.70
    4044 18AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Loud Speaker Cable - 50ft (For In-Wall Installation)
    1
    $4.50
    $4.50
2948 Optical Toslink to Coaxial (RCA) Digital Audio Converter
    1
    $11.20
    $11.20
1324 6 Outlet Surge Strip, Metal
    1
    $8.18
    $8.18

I think that should get me hooked up. I assumed that their stuff was higher quality than the cheapy cables that came with DVD players etc over the years. The HDMI cable I have now was a freebie with a $70 DVD player, so I figured I would replace everything with a known quality.

    Did I do ok?

Looks like you should have what you need.

I would have gotten a minimum 16 gauge speaker wire, depending on the run length.
