Yamaha & Composite video procesing

I have a Yamaha RX-V663 home theatre receiver and when I plug one of my satellite receivers into the composite video inputs (an older Motorola sat receiver with composite video only) I get severely degraded video quality.
If I plug the Motorola directly into my Panasonic Plasma the video is very good.
So I assume the Yamaha is doing something weird trying to process the composite video but I don't really see any particular settings in the input menus on the Yamaha to try to address the issue.
has anyone seen anything like this or have any suggestions?
BTW, I am connecting the main output on the Yamaha to the Panasonic with HDMI.Motorola DSR-410
