TV volume control

TV volume control
Does some one know of any add on equipment (processor etc.) that will compress or control the volume level of the TV sound output.
Like the jump in sound level of TV commercials.
AND level out the sound level between quite passages (whisper) and action (blaringly loud)

I believe such a device was sold many years ago (for loud commercials), but is no longer on the market. I don't know if it worked very well.

If you're using your home stereo for a sound source you could put a compressor inline between the signal source (cable box, sat. receiver etc.) and the amp.
The cheapest one I could find online was at Musician's Friend, it was a Nady unit for about $69. Not sure how well it would do for TV as it's a "pro sound" unit.
Some TVs have (had?) some sort of volume compensation built in to level things out. Not sure if any still have that.

I've used the VR-1 for two years, and it really works. You will need to use Component outputs, since the HDMI cable precludes using any 'inline' audio processor.
