just a simple question. Just picked up a Directv box from goodwill for 3 bucks and it has an access card (says DirecTV on the card).

Before I decide to set up a LNB for 101 is there any free channels that you can get with no subscription? On Dish you can get Dish 101, NASA, Angel One and a couple others.

(I havent had DirecTV since they bought Primestar back in the day and we were in a Pegasuck area so we went with Dish)

Yes, there are a few chs, but no "real" chs that I know of.

I got an old receiver at a yard sale one time and tried the same thing. The only chs I got where the ones by Direcrtv....for example, pay per view previews, the info ch about the sports times, the customer support ch, etc. The only thing worth it was for the background music on the power point chs...The music was the same as one of the XM chs...I just can't remember what station it was, but it played good music!

Not worth it if that's all your doing with it .

100 D channel
maybe 101 thou not sure
200 Movie preview (PPV)
201 maybe D* info channel
500 Movie preview ( Premium)

Maybe the XM channels in the 800's

The card wasn't stolen? I know they can't be hacked anymore, but they still get stolen. BTW, I saw a first-generation RCA DSS receiver in a thrift store for $5. I should have picked it up, just for a conversation piece.

I wasn't going to activate it. As noted above, I haven't had D in 10 years so I wanted to see what free channels were there.

I guess when every box I've seen doesn't have a card and I got this one with a card for 3 bucks I cant go wrong if I got SOMETHING on it. Like I say on Dish there are some free channels (NASA, Angel One and a few others) so I didn't know if maybe some of those religious or shopping channels were in the clear on a D* box too.

If you want one, I'll be glad to send you one, they are just collecting dust here. :D

If it was disconnected before deactivating, it will probably work for a few days (I have several boxes which were given to me after my old RCA died). I was going to activate one of them, but it was cheaper to get a R15 DVR (free after rebate) than to buy a new access card. The last time I checked, the boxes all still worked, but if left connected for long they would probably receive a signal to disable them.
