How do I record more than 2 shows at once with my 722k

I have read here and on other forums that the 722k is capable of recording up to 4 shows at once 2 on sat and 2 on OTA. I cannot figure out how to do this, and when I ask Dish they tell me it can only record 2 shows at a time. Can someone please give me a clue.

Even if you don't have the OTA module installed, you should be able to record 2 sat channels. Can you not do this? Select a channel and push the Record button. Select another channel and push the Record button. Now push the DVR button twice. The recorded program list should show two channels recording. When you schedule recordings using the guide, it should show a clock with either a 1 or 2 indicating which of the two tuners has been scheduled for that recording.

When you do what Laddyboy suggested, make sure you select TV2 for the 1st recording by using the up arrow and then right arrow to the TV2 tuner. Then you can also record on TV1's tuner.
Also, you can pregrom a program to record in the future Navigate to the program and press Select. You should see a "2" show up and a choice to record once, new episodes or all episodes. You can then select another program that's on at the same time and then it will record to TV1 tuner. Likewise with the ota module installed you can do the same

Are you in single user mode (SUM) or dual user mode (DUM)? Multiple recordings can be done with both, but it is more seamless when in SUM.

Why is it more seamless in Single rather than dual? I never use Single since I'll often be watching a prerecorded program off of TV2 while the wife is watching something on TV1. Single mode seems to defeat the purpose of having a dual tuner dvr. You do loose the pip in dual.

I never used dual, only single. In single mode, to record 4 manually, you pick 2 sat channels and set them to start recording, then do 2 OTA channels and do the same. Or set up 2 SAT + 2 OTA events at the same time and it is done. No tricks, no sweat!

. . . And OTA can be tuned from the 2nd TV (TV 2 in Dual Mode) of the 722K, unlike the previous gens of ViP's.

Keep in mind that while you can record up to 4 HD channels (2 sat & 2 OTA) at the same time, the ViP will only access 2 channels at a time for PIP, or Swap. You can access the other 2 channels for PIP or Swap features by tuning to those channels or accessing them from the DVR list, so no 3 PIP's over the 4th channel (yet?).

It is more seamless because you don't ever have to think about selecting TV 1 or 2. You just set the timers and you can change the channel even when something is recording on "your TV's" tuner (assuming something isn't recording on the other tuner). You are confusing the "dual tuner dvr" with a the home distribution built into the dish DVRs. The dual tuner refers to the ability to record 2 satellite programs at once not watch two programs at once. I don't care about being able to watch different things in different rooms with the same receiver. It sounds like you do use this feature as you and your wife are watching TV in separate rooms. I do have TV 1 modulated to a small TV in the kitchen, but other than that I have receivers at each TV as I only own HDTVs and the non-HD signal is unacceptable to me. When the Sling 300 is released and you can watch TV2 in HD on a remote TV I would consider dropping a receiver as the Sling 300 is reported to automatically switch the receiver from single to dual mode when in use.

I fully know the difference between dual/single mode and TV1/2 outputs. My 722 uses tuner 2 as the primary tuner for recording from Dish. When I want to record what I'm watching, I have the choice of using tuner 1 or 2. In addition to the coax output going to a TV in the downstairs family room, I have the composite outs from TV! going to a vcr whose tv out coax feeds a tv in the kitchen and an a/b switch at a tv next to my computer. The other side of the switch is super basic cable(~$10/mo). This gives me the ability to watch 3rd set of non-local network stations via QAM. My 211 feeds into the same tv via hdmi. The cable is also hooked up to the vcr so I can watch local network if I'm in the kitchen and am recording on tuner 2. My downstairs tv is also hooked up to cable and also has an a/b switch. Since that tv's tuner is set for cable, I receive the TV2 output on 116 even though the 722's modulator is set to 60.

Since you demonstrated above that you know the difference I don't understand your original comment:

Since that is not the purpose of a dual TUNER dvr. It is related to having a dual output DVR.

But anyway, no biggie

If you have only one TV what would be the purpose of using dual mode? My old 622 and now my 722k work fine in single mode and my wife loves that she can watch one program while another is recording or record two while watching a previous recording. Doesn't "defeat" the purpose of a dual tuner for us!

You can't record more than 2 shows. If you are asking how you can record two shows and watch something else again you can't do that eather. The best you can do is get a 612 receiver.

WRONG!!!! You can record up to 4 shows at the same time with a 722K, provided you have the OTA module and an OTA antenna. Along with that you can record those 4 shows AND watch a pre-recorded show at the same time.

What I was getting at was that in single mode, the same signal is outputted to both tv outputs. In dual you can watch different programing on each output. Where I would use single is if I was at the downstairs tv and I wanted to watch an ota channel since tuner 2 does not output the ota signal.

Here's a little secret: You don't have to connect a dual-tuner receiver to (2) TVs. Many people only connect it to (1), hence the appeal of single-user mode.

I love my TV.
I love my 722k.
I even love my Sling Adapter.

But I have to say... If you watch SO MUCH TV that you have to record four things at once... GO OUTSIDE. There's this thing called the Sun. It's kinda like the lightbulbs in your den, but bigger and brighter. There's also this awesome sensation called Wind. It's like being in front of a fan, only it's natural! Give it a try, I promise you'll like it.

This concludes your public service message.

People aren't necessarily recording 4 things at once all the time. Instead it happens there will be four things you want to see all airing at the same time. Between wives and kids there's a lot of viewing diversity. That's when the extra recording capability is a big plus.

I'm kidding, of course! I know everyone's situation is different. Heck sometimes I wish I had an OTA module so I could snag three programs at once.

I wish there was a better way to convey sarcasm over the internet. :
