UPDATE - THE PRICING POSTED BELOW IS WRONG! SOME PACKAGES ARE GOING UP AS MUCH AS $15.

FOR THE CORRECT PRICING PLEASE SEE http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/300235-DISH-Price-Increase-1-17-2013?p=3052375#post3052375

Well after two years of not having a price increase on its core packages, SatelliteGuys has learned that today DISH announced on it's Retailer Chat, DISH announced that prices will be going up effective January 17th, 2013.

It appears that all base packages are going up $5 a month.
DVR Service Fee is going up $1 (excludes the 922 and HOPPER)
If you have all 4 Pay Services (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz) then your bill will go up $1.

Those customers who are within their first year of service with DISH will not see a price increase until after they have completed their first year. (So if you want to sign up for DISH, then sign up now and have your rates locked for the next year!)

We have reached out to DISH PR for official confirmation of these prices, but this is what announced today on the Retailer Chat.

Less than many had guessed. After two years, I can live with it. If the DVR fee is the only fee increase, so much the better.

Yeah I think most TV Providers will have a increase so we all at some point will be paying more. Hmm be nice to see a decrease some day. :)

I figured all along that anything more than a $5 increase would have been PR suicide for Dish. But I bet it's really $6 for most people including the DVR increase.

I can tell you what the PR people will say......due to the increase of programming costs by the provider, DISH continues to fight for the consumer to keep prices low, industry-leading equipment, high consumer satisfaction, yada, yada, yada, yada.

It would have been better to leave fees as is, and I was wrong on that, I thought Dish would not raise them. That said, $5 was the top of what I thought Dish would raise prices so they went over that. So that's $72 more a year. I can see it putting some over the edge and reducing their package or trying to go without a service. But in comparison to other carriers, probably still will be somewhat less especially because they will also (Most likely) be raising their costs also.

"If you have all 4 Pay Services (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax and Starz) then your bill will go up $1"

this will apply to AEP too including the $5.00 increase?

AEP will see a $5 increase + $ 1 for 4 premiums.

In addition AEP will no longer receive the $9/mo discount for premium programming. Wasn't familiar with that to begin with, but this in fact makes AEP $15 higher.

I think I am just going to put our account on vacation once football is over and use hulu and netflix for 6 months until football starts again. I have OTA HD dvrs too, that I can record local programming with to supplement the online programming.

Even though I can afford it, in my opinion TV is just getting too pricey for all the crappy channels with constant onscreen channel logos and pop up ads, infomercials and the few channels that draw the majority of viewers. I can watch network programming free OTA and the few cable shows we do watch, you can watch online later thru Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, Itunes or the network websites for cheaper, than paying a monthly sub.

I just got some more information. And will post in a few.

Some prices are going up more then $5 a month! AEP going up $15 a month! (Eeek!)

Eek I have just got this in... and the prices I listed are wrong!

Some packages are going up to $15 a month (AEP)

EXISTING CUSTOMER PROGRAMMING PRICING UPDATES

DISH is proud to have frozen our programming prices starting in 2011, and continuing through 2012. Starting on 1/17/2013, we will be raising prices on most core programming packages to keep pace with rising programming costs. However, we understand the impact this will have on our loyal existing customers. To help these customers continue to enjoy their programming at their current price point, we are introducing limited-time Price Protection credits for residential and MDU residential customers most impacted by these changes.

» Price Protection Credits
• Credits will be automatically applied to eligible accounts - no action is required by the customer.
• Available to eligible customers under all residential and MDU residential plans.
• Eligibility for credits is based on account activation date. Credit amount is based on programming subscription as of 1/17/2013.
• Credits apply starting 1/17/2013 through 12 months after the customer’s activation date. For example, if a customer
activated on December 15, 2012 with America’s Top 200, they would receive a $5/mo. Price Protection credit starting January
17, 2013 and going through December 14, 2013

I may try to downgrade to the Welcome Package once football season is over and try a Hulu / Amazon mix on the PS3. Too many of the channels are just too repetitive. Plus, the little lady I'm seeing is talking the "m" word and insists we would be spending too much on TV. She wants WE, TBS and the locals so she would be covered anyways.

On this topic, though, I feel $5 (for the majority of packages) isn't terrible considering the two year freeze. That said, I'm in an economy where, for me, each penny counts.

The increase that surprises me is the one for AT120+. If I am reading correctly, that is a $10 increase just for the RSNs beyond AT120. I guess sports cost. :0)
