I have looked a both Direct and Dish on the same TV on the same day when we switched. There is no doubt that Direct TV has noticeably better image quality. Zero. I saw it first and thought I was crazy, then my wife walked in and said exactly the same thing.
I am right at this moment watching Directv on a Samsung plasma and I see no marked improvement over Dish on my same TV at home.
I have been cruising a lot of forums and a clear majority say Direct has higher image quality.
As you can see from my sig, I have both services. What you can't see is that both the Genie and Hopper are connected to my 73" Mitsi DLP set. The only discernible difference I can tell is that on darker shows the Hopper produces a slightly brighter picture. Other than that, it is a complete wash. This viewed from about 9' away.
I have come from Directv and had the opportunity to do a side by side comparison as I was coming over to Dish Network about 6 mo. ago. There used to be noticeable differences between Directv and Dish Network in HD picture quality, but not anymore. The visual HD difference now is so slight that it is a non factor for most people. But, just to go with it for a minute, here is my take. In the area of richness of color and visual enjoyment, I'll go with Dish. They offer the most enjoyable picture for my eyes! In the area of definitive lines, Directv has the ever so slight advantage by a thinner than thin frogs hair. When I want HD neither wins. I'll go with Blue Ray there. OTA, Cable, & Satellite all are substandard and way over compressed. The days of the comparison for visually selecting a provider are over for me. Most people now recommend that a person finds the provider that has the channels one is looking for and going with that provider. I never thought that the day would come when I talked that way, but it is here! And it has been here for what is getting to be a long while now.
Directv has the same locals with the same, or slightly worse PQ in Phoenix Arizona. I love comparing my hopper to my bros genie. But either way, the PQ is so close, I would never use that as my deciding factor. I don't wanna give up PTAT. That's the only throng holding me to dish.

And that's the point to take away from these never ending comparisons. One is not really any better than the other overall. I can see a difference, but not one being better. Calibrating your TV is the real factor. Equipment is much more the deciding factor. (And possible getting the channels you want)

So out of curiousity I have only been doig this forum(ignore my start date) for about 3 weeks I would say. Maybe alittle longer. What's the oldest "recover" thread you guys have seen? 2004 seems like it might go the distance.
