Although I have pushed the "limits" I generally try not to troll. I .just like to Liven the conversation by presenting an alternative viewpoint.A simple warning and I usually tone it down a bit but some of these posters are getting a bit out of hand..An example would be the poster that claimed Mr Ergen Contributes to democrats.when a simple google search that he contributes to anyone who is in power..I will go back to the Pit now..

This is correct, while it is fair use to use a paragraph or two of an article, it is a violation of copyright to post the entire article, and of course the article must contain a link to that article so that people can read the rest of the article. But posting full articles (sometimes without even having a link) is indeed a violation of copyright. As you know the staff here is all volunteers and have real jobs so we can not read every post posted, so PLEASE if you see a post like this report it so we can remove it and take proper action.
What about posting a link only with your comment ?
Thats not the same as posting the whole article from another site, even though it would direct you to another site.
This happens in the Sports section as news that someone finds important and wants people to see it or be aware of it.

A link is fine. Even posting a link and quoting a few sentences or even a paragraph is ok.

He means posting the link and putting the whole article as text on Sat guys. Can't do that.

Most people are doing it correctly.

As a former staff here and now just a member, I will leave everything as it is. Those that troll have an opinion as well and therefore, as a member, I can ignore them or not read the post. In fact, this is what I do most of the time. It does not bother me. I many times learned how nonsensical and biased they sound and keeps my posts in check. As a former staff, I remember how irritated this could be and I had to refrain from censoring these type of posts. In the long run, we learned how to deal with them and basically it goes away. I already spent too much time on them by reading this thread.

Thankfully the answer to that is no.

Gosh I remember the Like / Dislike wars from last time. Good thing no tall bridges are around here, or I would have jumped. :D
Limit the number of dislikes to 10 a month
Or if its abused..remove it for that member

There are no options for doing that. There is also no option for Dislike. The like button is either on or off and thats it. And honestly without checking since the Like button is built into the software I am not 100% sure I can even turn that off.

Trolling is a person who instigates discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,by posting inflammatory or off topic messages in an online community with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response, disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
Trolling is act, not a person. It may or may not be accurately defined by the Wikipedia definition of a troll. ;)

True trolling is a directed attack of an individual or class of individuals based on a disparagement (real or perceived) of something they feel emotional about. That some get emotional about channel counts or business decisions is the instrument for trolling to enter in and fester.

I think the act of trolling was explained clearly in my post, but thank you for elaborating.

If you are going to change how you enforce a no trolling rule, make sure you formally announce it with a clear and simple definition as to what is considered trolling so there is no confusion by members or staff. Give a warning and then ban from the sections violated.

I think the definition that just says posts designed to upset others is way too broad.

To me a troll post is like what I see in another forum, where I post an announcement about a release of a new video by Disney, and a Disney hater responds with comments like Disney is stupid, evil, and greedy and they charge too much... Then to let everyone know, they claim they are not a Disney hater, just stating the facts. Can a rule be written to stop that kind of trolling?

I guess when I make fun of the ten million Blugras every channel in HD threads, I'm also trolling?
I do bash both Directv and Dish at times, but I subscribe to both of them.
For example I like the Dish receivers better, but hate that they don't have MLBEI and seem to drop channels more often.
Would that one comment get me banned? At least I don't post the same comment millions of times in the same thread just to get the fanboys riled up.

Any response to a Bob Haller started thread should be exempt from any trolling rules. It is too hard to resist.:biggrin:nana

I guess so. I got a post removed because I apparently commented on one of his posts that upset a staff member. He posted in the Directv area about a channel that was uplinked and when folks wondered why he would care as he doesn't have D* he said he went to his neighbors house and saw it.
My comment was along the lines of "that's nice. I don't go to my neighbors house to see what channels Dish is pulling"

That, presuming you are talking about user "dael", IMO, isn't trolling. That person has strong opinions about something (a receiver), but that alone isn't trolling to me.

Fair assessment. I think I would define trolling as repeated behavior with the intent or perceived intention to disrupt the "adults" when they are having an educated and informed discussion.
