Kindle e-reader owner's thread

So, I'll admit it. I am a Kindle e-ink junkie. While I love my iPad to read with the Kindle App, there is something about e-ink which is easier on the eyes, and there are no distractions of everything else while using it. And I've owned most of the variants over the years. In 2014, I put down the cash for the state-of-the-art Kindle Voyage. And it is a great reader. Battery lasts forever. So much higher screen quality than the paper white. Just excellent.

Last year the Kindle Oasis came out. No origami cover, and a funky re-design, but supposedly the best of the best. I said no, I'm happy with the Voyage. In the last few months I got a bit frustrated by the haptic touch buttons on the voyage which didn't seem as responsive as they used to be. But I didn't upgrade.

Well, a few weeks ago, on what was an impulse, I said, why not? So I got the oasis. Darn thing is light. It is small. Without the cover -- which connects like the Smart Cover adapter on the iPad Pro, it weighs almost nothing. The two physical page turn buttons are on one side, and work very nicely. Want them on your left hand, flip the device. The screen rotates. Very nice.

it also has two batteries, a very tiny battery in the oasis itself (about 245mAh) and a heftier one (1100+) on the cover. Together it is more battery than the voyage. and now the battery shows two indicators, oasis, and cover. In theory the cover should be charging the oasis, kind of like how an external battery case charges an iPhone. that does not always seem to be the case. But so far, it is hard to tell if the battery will last longer than the voyage.

Was it worth the extra money? It is a premium-priced device. I am not sure. Side by side, I don't really notice the difference between the 6 LED vs. 10 LED. I do like using the Oasis when lying in bed. Much easier in my hands. I don't think the book cover adds a lot of functionality though, and think the origami was nice. And it is almost identical to the origami on my now quite old Kindle Fire HDX 7. Damn, I do have an e-book problem. :)

I was originally thinking that I would sell my voyage when I got the oasis, but I am not sure yet. I'm almost thinking I'll use both. Whispersync really makes switching between devices instanteous. And I can see lots of places where the Voyage is preferable.

ok, back to reading....

I've enjoyed my Oasis since buying. Really prefer the physical buttons. I still have a Voyage and Paperwhite, keep them charged up 'just in case'. ;)

I wonder if there will be anything after the Oasis. The product seems pretty mature at this point.

I really love the physical buttons. Much improvement, as I found myself usually swiping the screen with the voyage. But yeah, I am keeping my voyage, and will use it from time to time.

So, the Oasis 2017 is out. 7" screen. No more battery in the case. And doesn't come with a case. That said, I bought it. And absolutely love it. So nice having a large 7" e-ink screen. This is a winner. No clue about battery life, but the device itself is fast. Have not paired speakers to it for audible, as no need -- my iPhone powers audible. But this is a great top of the line e-reader.

Will be selling my Oasis 2016. No need for both.

Pre-ordered the new Oasis with the leather cover. Noticeably more heavy then the prior Oasis. Wasn't sure about the bigger screen but it is growing on me. Nice fit and finish.

Old Oasis is now my backup. Girlfriend is using the Voyage. Got $35 from Amazon trading in the 1st generation Paperwhite.

It is a lot heavier, but compared with the voyage it is pretty similar in weight. But the 7" screen is very nice!!

The best thing: it’s now waterproof!

Do you guys think it will be on sale around Black Friday?

And how are the ads on new Kindles? Do they bother you at all? Or should I get one without ads?

The 7 inch with 3 g doesn't come with ads...but the ads are only on the screensaver/lock screen..but I hardly notice them on my voyager

Right, they are only on the lock screen, once you are past that you never see them again. They don't popup or anything while reading.

Is it true that on 3G you can no longer browse web or check emails? And it only works in the USA?
This was possible on my previous old 3G Kindle and came very handy when traveling internationally. The browser was very slow but usable.
Sounds like there is no good reason to get a 3G version, unless you are a compulsive book buyer.

There is Verizon 3g and Att 3g..two different services..depends which one the kindle uses..the voyager used att..if the new one uses Verizon then it will only work in usa..because Verizon 3g is cdma and only works in the usa..att used gsm..which the rest of the world used

I got it without the ads. For $20 more it was worthwhile.

I have the 8GB wifi version. It is a remarkable device. Screen size is perfect. battery lasts. And it is zippy.

I don't bother with Audible and bluetooth on it, my audiobooks are on my iPhone, not needed to put on the Oasis.

I think I'm going to sell my original Oasis (which was also a great device, just don't need it anymore).

I am going on a cruise in December, and am glad that there is the waterproof feature, although I've used kindles on the beach for years and never had problems. It's not like you are going to swim with them, although I guess you could lay in a beach chair in the water, and read.

Two weeks in, and I absolutely love the new Oasis. Perfect size screen. Premium price, but the best Kindle ever.
Did u get the 32 gig model with 3g and no special offers?..or did u get the common sense model with less memory, wifi only and special offers

common sense model without special offers. The last Kindle I had with 3G was my original "Kindle 2." Special offers annoy me, but for $20 its worth making them go away. I've never had an issue with a kindle with wifi or running out of space. Books take very little space. Yes, this kindle does audible (older ones used to BTW), but I have audible on my iPhone.

I’m not really an avid reader but there are a few books I’d like to check out, I used one of my $325 Prepaid MasterCards I got from Little Magenta to bring a Pixel 2 over to them to get an ad free 32GB Oasis 2017. Should be arriving Thursday.

Are there any good leather cases for this thing? A buddy of mine at work has the previous Oasis that came with the leather charging case. I loved the look and their feel of it, but it seems there are no equivalent cases sans the charging capabilities for the 2017 version. I’m not interested in fabric ones and the cheap leather cases look well cheap.

A better version of this one, which looks like it has been pulled, would be great. This one looks like real leather, the other cases look like fake man made junk.
