So, I'll admit it. I am a Kindle e-ink junkie. While I love my iPad to read with the Kindle App, there is something about e-ink which is easier on the eyes, and there are no distractions of everything else while using it. And I've owned most of the variants over the years. In 2014, I put down the cash for the state-of-the-art Kindle Voyage. And it is a great reader. Battery lasts forever. So much higher screen quality than the paper white. Just excellent.
Last year the Kindle Oasis came out. No origami cover, and a funky re-design, but supposedly the best of the best. I said no, I'm happy with the Voyage. In the last few months I got a bit frustrated by the haptic touch buttons on the voyage which didn't seem as responsive as they used to be. But I didn't upgrade.
Well, a few weeks ago, on what was an impulse, I said, why not? So I got the oasis. Darn thing is light. It is small. Without the cover -- which connects like the Smart Cover adapter on the iPad Pro, it weighs almost nothing. The two physical page turn buttons are on one side, and work very nicely. Want them on your left hand, flip the device. The screen rotates. Very nice.
it also has two batteries, a very tiny battery in the oasis itself (about 245mAh) and a heftier one (1100+) on the cover. Together it is more battery than the voyage. and now the battery shows two indicators, oasis, and cover. In theory the cover should be charging the oasis, kind of like how an external battery case charges an iPhone. that does not always seem to be the case. But so far, it is hard to tell if the battery will last longer than the voyage.
Was it worth the extra money? It is a premium-priced device. I am not sure. Side by side, I don't really notice the difference between the 6 LED vs. 10 LED. I do like using the Oasis when lying in bed. Much easier in my hands. I don't think the book cover adds a lot of functionality though, and think the origami was nice. And it is almost identical to the origami on my now quite old Kindle Fire HDX 7. Damn, I do have an e-book problem.
I was originally thinking that I would sell my voyage when I got the oasis, but I am not sure yet. I'm almost thinking I'll use both. Whispersync really makes switching between devices instanteous. And I can see lots of places where the Voyage is preferable.
ok, back to reading....
