Hello

I am trying to allign a dish that I hung on a steel building underneath a 3 foot overhang that is approximately 16' over the dish. There are a lot of steel buildings around me, but nothing to the south for miles. I can get 110 at 96%, but nothing on 119 or 101. Then I tried an old round dish that I have and I could get transponder 22 on 101 in the 83% range, but that was the only one. Why is this happening? Is my location the problem? Thanks for the help

Are you sure you are pointing at 110? I'm assuming you have a 3 lnb dish. If it's a 5 lnb, then you should be pointing at 101.

I guess I am not sure I was pointing at 110, I was using one of those $4.00 Sat Finders. I am just going by what the receiver said, and it had really solid signal on 110. I just wondering about the steel and the overhang messing with things. It shouldn't be this hard, but why the good reception on transponder 22 with the round dish and nothing else?

You do know the round dish points at 101, yes?

Yes, that is why I tried the round dish. Would the overhang prevent me from hitting all the transponders? I just don't understand how I could get such good signal on transponder 22.

If you are getting one then you will get them all. Not all of the trans have the same signal strength.

How many trans are you showing? There are only 11 on 110.

All of the trans besides 22 read 0. The receiver is an older Hughes TIVO SD. How far is 101 from 110? Am I close? Never got any signal on 101 w/ the 3 LNB.

It's possible to get a good signal from 110 and not 101 or 119 if your tilt is incorrect or the mast isn't plumb.

Valid DirecTV TPs on 110 are 8, 10, and 12 (after the sat C LNB converts them down from 28, 30, and 32). DirecTV uses TPs 22-32 on 119. You can verify the sats by tuning to chs 490-494.

My mast is plumb, I ordered a birdog to learn what I am doing wrong...Needless to say this is very frustrating, but also kind of fun. What about all the steel around my location and the overhang? Not a problem?

Depending on how far south you are, the overhang could be a problem. Here in CT the look angle is at most 33 degrees. The farther south, the higher you must be able to see. Again, how many trans are you showing? If more than 11, then you are looking at 101 and not 110.

When I go into signal strength, I select 101 and see 0% on every transponder, I then go to 110 and see 85+% on every transponder and finally 119 and see all 0's. I am in WI, so my guess would be that the overhang is ok going by your post. I also was sure to select the correct dish size when I tried the single LNB. My zip is 54730.

Okay, but how many trans are you showing on 110 when you do a test? If 11, then your tilt is likely off.

Yeah, it is 11. I am tilting at 33. I was at 35 and didn't have anything....

It must be the tilt since you said the mast is plumb. Keep adjusting the tilt until you get a signal on 101. That should get you a signal on 119. You may need to readjust the look angle a bit as you change the tilt.

I will try again tomorrow evening. Thanks a lot for your help, I will give an update.

If you're getting such high signal strength on the 110 and nothing on the 101 and 119, you're pointed at the wrong sat.

Point you're dish to the very next signal peak going from the east to the south (if that makes sense). On the Triple LNB, the 101 sat is the second peak you will see with a signal meter. This should only require about an 8 degree change of azimuth, but you may need to reset you're elevation to the original setting.

The other thing it could be is that the LNB is bad, but I find it difficult to think two of the three would fail at the same time.

Let us know if you get it fixed.

I will let you tonight.....I will reset my elevation and try again. Thanks for all the help!!

I thought he might be pointing at the wrong sat, too, but he is showing the correct number of transponders. I think his tilt is off.

Can you answer this question though? Why when I tried the single LNB could I only get signal on trans 22? Shouldn't of all the transponders been there?
