Not sure if the topic "crosses the line" on this board..If so, sorry.

If not, then...

Can I cancel my service and sign up for new service w/ my wife's name and SSN to get the DishHD DVR for free?

Do they have restrictions on using the same physical address?

You will likely launch a debate on ethics with this one.

Is it possible, yes.
Is it ethical, my opinion no.

I read through the Terms of Service to see if they define "new, first time residential customers"...

They basically say it's anyone who is currently not a subscriber (or in the previous 6 months) and has never has Dish for longer than 6 months.

They do not define whether the customer is the "household" or the "individual account holder".

I want to know.....If I call DISH and honestly tell them I want to cancel my service and sign up using my wife's name/SSN, will they let me?

Not sure I understand why "ethics" would be in question.

no becausse of a a couple reasons! 1 last name is the same and then the address and the phone # are the same!!!!! so no that would not work either

How much would the HD receiver cost as an upgrade?

There is nothing wrong or unethical with canceling and signing up your wife as a new customer. Charlie the CEO would prefer you didn't though.

How much the upgrade to a 722 would cost depends on how long you've been a customer. Cost would be between $199 and $249 (installation costs already included). Only way to find out for sure is to call 800-333-DISH and ask. The GOOD NEWS is that DISH is offering a $100 mail in rebate for each receiver you upgrade (limit 2). So that let's you shave $100 off the price. Plus, if you are a first time DishHD subscriber you will get that package free for six months. That's worth $120 right there!

If you've been a customer for less than a year then forget about it. Can't blame them on that though. Those receivers cost them good money! Besides, I'm sure you got lots of goodies and freebies thrown at you when you first signed up.

Can't say I agree with it, but people do it all the time. Wifes name, use a cell phone number, and put an Apt. A on the address. I can't belive Dish does not catch this stuff.

On the bright side they are pretty easy to install.

DISH does catch this stuff. It's a question of when Unky Chuck will make something of it though.

what deal are you trying to get? iceondsom has great point. i mean, if you are just wanting to replace a 322 with a 522 or 625, there is a great chance that after the rebate it will be cheaper then paying 49.99 for a new activation under your wifes name. if you are wanting an hd rec, there is a possible chance that it might be cheaper or even the same after the rebate. plus the 6 months free of hd. and it is seriously less of a hassel then cancling service, sending back equip, then having to have it all re-installed again. it might even be an upgrade where all they ahve to do is ship you a replacement rec. thats a lot better then taking time off of work to wait for a tech to reinstall a whole new system. follow ice's advice, call and inquire about a dish'' it up upgrade. you may very well like the answer you get.

Be honest with them

It took me a few attempts to get the right CSR. But after finding the right one, I came away with this deal from dish. I had (1) HD-DVR and (1) SD-DVR with 5 months left on my commitment. The CSR offered me to replace the SD-DVR with a new 722 for $99 upfront with the $100 rebate mailed to me. 10 months of free HD and 3 months free HBO and Showtime. Sometimes it pays to be persistent and just tell them what you are looking for.
