While cable TV bills increased about 7.5% in the second half of 2008 to $71 per month, according to research firm Centris, satellite television customers saw their bills go up even more.
Satellite TV bills averaged $74 per month in the last half of 2008, up almost 9% — or $6 — from the same period a year earlier, according to Lauren Leavitt, manager of syndicated research for Centris.

I pay $41 with Dish (50+ regular HD channels). I'd kinda like to get FoxNews & Nick - but it's not worth the extra cost.

To get the same HD channels, I'd be paying $82+ with Directv. With basic digital Cable, it's over $79 (more for HD - I'm waiting on a reply on pricing) & only 17 HD channels (excluding the premium movie channels).

If I switched to either other option, I'd get less HD channels and double my cost. So I'm happy lowering the average. :)

dfergie: I'd be interested to see what the numbers are for HD packages across the boards. Looks like cable is way more expensive for HD in my area.

Ironically, Satellite has potentially become the new "Cable Pig". To be honest, Satellite may be a little more tech savvy and subscribe to more premium tier channels and services. Additionally, how and the heck does Cable (Telcos included) break out their pricing when many of them are discounting bundled services (aka Triple Play: TV, Internet, Phone). I am paying around $180 with FiOS, but that includes TV, Internet, Phone and several receivers/Cablecards.

I'd be interested to see what Apple TV's average cost is compared to DISH Network. I watch only a select few shows. The Discovery Networks (Deadliest Catch, Dirty Jobs, Mythbusters, American Chopper), Rescue Me (which I haven't seen since the first season since Dish doesn't have FX in HD), Burn Notice and Monk. That's pretty much it. I barely watch sports on TV anymore, the only sport I follow anymore is Baseball and Hockey and those are availalble through other means (Gameday Audio on the iPhone for MLB and NHL Online).
