I am getting directv on the 29th. I am also installing a network throughout my house this week. Ethernet in every room, 2 in master, 3 in living room ran to Gb switch. I am working on the network currently and was installing leviton jacks in all rooms.

1) my coworker's son is a dtv tech and advised me not to run two RG6 for the hd-dvrs because they are SWIM?? compatable. this helps in costs of leviton products, but what is SWIM?

2) he also advised me that they are giving hr23 and hr24 to all new customers now. I ordered two HD-DVRs. will I be able to network these through my switch and view recorded programs from one dvr on the other?

I am new to dtv, according to my coworker's son, it is 1000 times better than cable, but I am curious to find out everything I will be able to do.

I am also getting a basic receiver for my son's room.

Thanks!

SWiM is the Single Wire Multiswitch which means that compatible DVRs only need one coax to enable both tuners. The newest tech which utilizes SWiM is DECA which is a technology where ethernet traffic uses tha coax for communication between receivers.

Doa search here on the forum for SWM or SWiM and DECA for lots of information.

Oh yeah. Welcome to the forum.:welcome

Welcome jhill007! Yep, it is a 1000 times better than cable, so enjoy. Why a gig switch? How much data you plan on pumping through out the house? A 10/100 would work just fine........hell, I even run wireless to my receiver at G speeds and I have no issues at all.

But to each their own. You will be happy with the picture quality.

With SWM you only need one wire for the DVR's. I would still reccomend running atleast 2 lines to the locations, you never know when you are going to want to do something else. You don't have to hook up the second line just have it in the box. With the DECA you don't even need to run network cables to the receivers as the internet connection runs over the coax, again you never know when you are going to need them for something else such as xbox or a blueray player.
