Are there any to be found?
Been a Directv cust. for over 6 years now, my contract is up again... looking for the next great deal. I was planning on going over to Dish but when all was said and done it, IMO, was not anything fantastic. Actually about 14 dollars short of what I am currently paying with Directv. I decided to call up Directv and see what they can do for me.
In the end I got offered 17 dollars off what I am currently paying. star/show for a freebie of 6 months. Keep in mind my contract just ended so I am at the top tier with NO adjustments/credits. Of coarse to add salt to the wound, the price increases. (I know everyone is doing it except my paycheck) I saw the Costco deal and it seemed fine for us, found out unable to do online, so I called and than found out - I am not a new customer, even though I am month to month. I said so I would call you cancel you, you come to pick up the stuff and I call you again to set up a new account. The rep stated a new customer is someone who hasnt been with them for 2 years.Seemed a bit unfair for my loyalty and never been a deadbeat with payments. SO I toss my hands up, searching for the best deals. Anyone here know how I can get a better deal as an existing customer?

My only advice is to ask for rentention department when you call and explain the situation and the fact that you're thinking about switching to dish. My experience was retention was able to give me a better offer than the "ordinary" customer service I spoke to the first few times.

I was a directv customer for 10 yrs. I wanted to get a upgrade to HD. They would hardly give me a deal on anything. I went with Comcast for 2 yrs and the change was very pleasant.

If you are married cancel the account in your name and put it in hers. She will be a new customer and get all the promo's for the first year. I have done this with dish before I came to direct. You will need different credit card or something different way of paying that your are using now.

Thanks! Had dish in my name, sold house. Got apartment without line of sight (charter cable, booooooo). Quickly switched apartments to have line of sight, Direct in my name yay! We will buy some land and build another house in two years, DISH in her name. Switch back to direct in a few more years?

Are we then done screwing the system?

Weird. I just dealt with them as a month-to-month customer of 14 years. I was SD, they gave me free HDDVR, free HD receiver, free HD channels for a year, an ongoing discount on a package change (I was still grandfathered on an ancient one). I still had to pay for the install of the MRV, but I was pretty satisfied with the discount they gave me. Did you ask for the retention department? That's the key, I'm convinced.

Gssh, this never even crossed my mind. Smart, the only issue is its the same address a different first name and all the equipment is already set up and in use. I will call again tomorrow see if this is possible.

On my last call with Directv, they did have an automated set up and I stated cancel service, I can only assume that this would be passed through to retention rather than customer service, but who knows- they dont identify themselves with department name.

You all are the best!

For us it would be a new address since we are going to build a house :)

If I'm looking for a deal I usually just say "cancel service" at the voice prompts and then I usually get switched to someone that is at least willing to try and help me with a decent deal. It never hurts to ask them for exactly what you want and let them know that you've been shopping around for other providers due to price and new customer deals.

*****UPDATE****

I called 2 more times today the first call didnt go well as I expected but the second was my golden ticket.

When I did call I say cancel service which I did every time I called. I got this nice, professional young man, that brought my 74.99 bill down to ....r u ready... 42.99 for the next year, heres what I got ..... 20 off base, 12 off receivers, 6 months free star and showtime and he put in the "notes" customer will call back for fall free showtime" (as we love DEXTER) and 2 months free game lounge. This is still a month to month contract but overall I am happy with it. Thank you all this is the best website I found in a long time!

very friggin cool :)

Glad to hear it all worked out. I dont know how they gave you money off the receivers but hey whatever works :)

I will just like to say this. Every account is different and same does not apply to everyone that calls in and screams cancel.

oh I agree. Qwest told me the same thing when I called in and got a deal. They say each customer is different and they look at tenure, payment history and how many times you've called in for deals (and other items)

I completely agree with you. For me, price was the HUGE factor. I pay on time every month, dont call in for pro rated rates and really never called in for "freebies" I wasnt looking for anything free just wanted a fair price that is comparable to what a new customer would get. I was set up to get Dish Network (though wasnt thrilled but not like we have much choices in our location) installed and was calling back to just cancel my service once and for all. Really after a almost 75 dollar hit, I was tickled for half. This is a major reason why I stay with them year after year. It works for us.

I could tell by what they gave you you had not received anything in quite some time and that you had a good history with us. My comment was not meant for you but for the person who been with us 1 year and now expects the world.

Given its the same address and we have the equipment it would seem to me sleezy..... as I stated before, there is enough greed going around not looking for it all just looking for a fair deal that a new customer would get.
Really, if enough people do the married thing eventually it will catch on and it will go away.

I agree, most people are just trying to get a a fair shake.

However, if you are not given one, doing the married thing isn't sleazy but I suppose that is a matter of opinion.

Hopefully they do catch on, because I would like to see them be more willing to give current customers a fair shake on the first call.

It's pretty funny to see someone here or on other forums saying - I've been a DIRECTV customer for 1 year, or x years, or what and says - They want to charge me full price for 4 more HD DVRs !! Jesus christ !! I can't believe this !! I pay for the football package !! They owe me !!

I call every few months and flat out ask them to lower my bill. The customer service reps always search around for some promos for me and I usually get a $20 break for 3 to 6 months. I just ask and ask nicely and explain that times are tough and blah blah blah, they ask me to hold and I tell them to take as long as they like and they come back with something. I always ask for just about $25 to$30 dollars off. I also ALWAYS pay me bill in full on-time too though.
