Dish network cancellation fees

So I switched from Directv to Dish Network 9 months ago. And I am not very happy with my decision at all. Part of it is because of Dish and part of it is because I didn't do my proper research. Anyway, that's neither here nor there.

I received a letter in the mail from Directv that if I switched back they would pay my cancellation fees up to 200 dollars. So I thought might as well call into Dish and see just what my fee would be. They told me that an early termination for my account would be 420 dollars for my AT200 package, and because I signed up for HD free for life, another 240 dollars would be tacked onto that! So I would be looking at almost 700 dollars to cancel early! Why so ridiculously high? I was told when I signed up that it would be prorated to approximately 17 dollars a month per month left on my contract!

I am extremely mad at Dish now because I feel I was lied to about the terms of my contract. If these termination numbers are correct, I will stick out the contract, but once it's done, I'm gone and Dish will never see my business again!

Call and ask again, or better yet, do a chat. It should be what the monthly termination was at the time multiplied by the the number of months left on your contract. That extra HD for life sounds completely off.

This is OT, hahler2, but ever since I saw your name a few months back, I couldn't help but wonder if you are Bob Haller's brother. Bob had mentioned a while back that his brother was a member here. Are you the brother?

The HD term fee is off. I read it as $10 for each month you had left on contract...so it would be $150 or so. But you think if he started with it there should only be one cancel fee....but its Dish so anything is possible ;)

The current cancellation fee on NEW contracts is $10.00. But is depends on what it was WHEN you signed up. About a hear ago it was $17.50.

The $10 was for the HD for free if you signed up for it after the fact.
The $17.50 is for the original 24 month contract

So I read it as if someone adds HD for free when they started it, there was a 24 month agreement (or $99) and the penalty was $10 a month
But a new sub from the get-go its $17.50 if they cancel early

Ok. Thanks for the quick responses guys. I did go and do a chat because those numbers didn't sound right at all. The fee is 17.50 a month, so my termination would be 262. And dahenny, I am NOT Bob Hallers brother. I hope that I don't ever come across that negative. Although probably the first post did because I was so mad when I wrote it. Thanks for the help guys!

Thanks Claude. As I say I don't know if I will switch now or wait til my contract is up and switch then, but I'm definitely considering it. And it's always good to have the real numbers so a person can make an informed decision.

You never did say what the problem you have with them is. Curious.

Sorry for another OT post, but I believe that Bob said his brother stopped reading here shortly after starting. He probably got tired of Bob's posts too.

No problem dahenny! Just a bad case of mistaken identity. :)

KAB I have a couple of problems with dish. One is the Disney channel disputes. My family watches a lot of Disney channel and abc family. Would be really nice to have those in hd. Also I'm tired of channel disputes period. I know directv has them also but a lot less than dish. I also miss mrv. I would love to watch any program on any tv in hd. Then the final issue is the fact that I can't get guide info for my ota stations. Which means I can't schedule recordings off it and makes my ota tuner card completely useless.

With directv I would get mrv, Disney in hd, and I could add a second dvr for much, much cheaper than dish and because i can watch recordings in any room, it wouldn't matter which dvr I schedule shows on. Right now I just have 1 922 with the hdmi split to a second tv so that I can have a poor mans mrv. But because I can't schedule recordings on my ota tuners, I don't have enough tuners to record everything and if I get a 612 it's an extra ten dollars a month and I dont have mrv.

Sorry if that's a complicated explanation but best I could do. As I said not all of the reasons I'm unhappy are dish networks fault but regardless I'm not enjoying my decision and I think that directv would provide the services I want.

no this poster is not my brother. fact is my brother lost interest, he is busy into drag racing and mark even got his car and photo on the front page of a national magazine. this put him in demand, as a advisor to other dragsters

So let's do some calculations. The OP has 15 months left in his contract.
$17.50 * 15 = $262.50 plus 10 * 15 = $150; Total is $412.50
Directv pays $200 of that so the OP would have to pay $212.50
Not even close to $700.

Just to clarify: If a customer has multiple commitments running simultaneously, he will only ever be charged 1 Early Termination Fee and it will default to the higher of the two. Example: New Cust 24 month commitment ($17.50 each month remaining) & HD Free for Life or DIU ($10.00 each month remaining) wants to cancel, only the New Cust Early Termination Fee will be assessed. I am sorry that you are unhappy with your Dish Network service hahler2, I understand a lot of your concerns. I wish they were problems that I could resolve for you. If I can be of service in any way, please let me know.
