Taft, CA.
I own XRQK Las Vegas, we play Indie Artists and will be adding more content soon; we are up linking our sister station XRQK Los Angeles for a few days. BN4IA, has been doing an LMA with us, since May and have been breaking our rules regarding four letter words; and are being suspended for a few days or longer!. Since we have Part 15 and micro broadcasters rebroadcasting us, four letter words are a big no no. We are going to be making some changes and hope we can better serve the FTA community. I think it's an undiscovered radio market on to itself, and surprised more broadcasters don't take advantage of it. I'm thinking of Switching to Oldies, what do you think of having Oldies FTA station? Or should we keep it Indie Artists? I value your input and where you might be listening us.

Thanks DJDish, I'm leaning in that direction too. At least at sometime during the broadcast day or on weekends.

oldies sounds good to me.

Oldies would be my suggestion.
But not just the A list; play the lesser known tunes, too.
Gives a bigger mix.

I also like heavy metal, for variety, though I'm not recommending it. :)

Add blocks of programming. I wouldn't totally up and run away from indie. Blocks of Fifties and 60's. Classic Rock 60' thru the 80's. Classic Country, Pop (Which IS today's Country music#) Indie. Blues, Modern and classic. Throw in a good selection of "B" sides** also. Mix it up in the blocks, minimal repeating day to day. (Unlike what I've heard on a satellite radio service. Could almost set you watch by what song is being played)
# This one I would listen to the least.
**Although, since they don't sell two sided analog audio media any more, what's a 'B' side?? Ok, some that made the top 100, or 200, (even if the artist never got a song higher than #198) not just the top 20. (Sick of "Top 20" stations)

BN4IA, insists the programming run in twenty four, one hour blocks in sequence. I have advised them, that ground hog radio; gets old really fast! I have let the Auto DJ, go into random rotation; but they insists it go from 1 to 24 and repeat. The streaming version, can't play mainstream; because of the outrageous cost. About $25,000 a year, per 100 listeners. But the rules are different for satellite radio, since no one can measure the listeners. Day parting programming into blocks, might be the best way to go. I wish the Indie Artists were more productive, we could use a lot more tracks and artists that are radio clean! XRQK Los Angeles, does its own thing and is starting to add more elements. I wish we could add another station, so we could have an Indie and a Oldies station; but up-link cost are very expensive. Unfortunately, advertisers don't understand FTA satellite and the number of receivers out there and that number would grow with more content. We have been told that 7-10 million receivers are in North America alone, that makes for a pretty good size radio market; with lots of potential. We do have some DJ's that produce Oldies shows, that we run on our micro broadcast stations. They cover from the late 50's to the 80's, That would be one way to start block programming, I will be working on it this week; lots of work!

Just got home from Vegas. Always enjoy visiting the area especially the weather this time of year. (We had mostly sunny warm days). I did quickly go through the radio dial at the hotel and didn't find much (wish I had read this thread I would have looked for XRQK). Lots of country and top 20 or whatever. Too much other stuff to do so didn't listen really at all.
Lately I find myself looking for "different" programming such as some of what we get up here on CBC, as well as alternative and independant music. I find it interesting when it's not designed to sell millions of albums(downloads?) for a wealthy record company; more room for the artist to play and discover their niche. I would expect it to be difficult hooking up with these artists individually but there may be a means somehow to do this. Radio stations that play their music might just make them rich if a particular song is catchy enough, as well as sell more commercial time.
Best of luck and we'll be looking for you on the dial next visit!

Good luck XRQK! I'll vote for 50s-60s oldies too if I can only pick one, haha. I'll listen to ancient oldies too , if anybody played 'em (way back, 30s-40s, love that old stuff)

I enjoyed listening the the weekend dance party last night, as I lost an hour. I'm a strange type -- I can actually drift asleep listening to high energy dance music for long periods.
