My Genie (HR34) has a USB port on the front panel behind a little door. I thought this might be a good way to connect my Nexus tablet so I could watch or stream internet shows. The problem is I can't find anywhere in the software an option where I can switch over to this USB port. Is there a way to do this? I did connect my tablet, but it didn't do a thing. What else would this port be used for?

Unfortunately, USB ports on the D* recvrs have never been implemented to be working as far as I know.

Can anyone verify that the USB port can safely be used for a cooling fan? And if so, will the fan go off when you power down the receiver?

I haven't used it for that purpose, but I have read several posts where someone was. You should be able to do a voltage test to see if it remains live when the unit is off. It should be.

I just checked on my HR24, the usb port behind the front door by Power button IS Hot all the time ....
Didn't try the one on the back.

I would imagine all models are this way .

Since my AM21 is powered through the usb on the back of my HR24, and it goes off when the dvr goes off, I'm thinking the usb port on the back must turn off when the dvr does.

Communicating via USB Port

There is a command protocol that uses the front USB Port. I played with it successfully on the HR2x boxes, but haven't tried it with HR34/44.

You need to use specific brand(s) of COM/USB adaptors since it needs to match the built-in drivers in the DTV box. The COM runs at a pedestrian 9600 bps (please don't refer to it as 'baud'). Since I no longer had computers with 15-pin com ports, I used the same COM/USB connector on each end with appropriate gender swaps.

The description of the commands, etc., can be found in a DTV document: DTV-MD-0058, "DIRECTV Set-Top Information for the Installer." A web search will turn up several sources. The most recent version I've seen is 2.1, dated August 6, 2007

The command set includes status inquiry, functional requests and simulation of a remote, button-by-button.

Have Fun!
