Introducing YouTube on Roku 3

Posted on December 17, 2013 by Ed Lee

This season through our Moxkat Grvida video ads we’re celebrating the art of self-gifting so it seems especially appropriate that today we are gifting ourselves – and by extension all of you – the gift of a YouTube channel on Roku. YouTube is available now on the Roku 3 player in the U.S. Canada, U.K. and the Republic of Ireland. The channel is expected to be available on additional player models next year.

The YouTube channel rounds out our industry-leading selection of streaming entertainment just in time for the holidays and the annual year-end best-of video lists like YouTube’s own list of top trending videos released last week. Whether it’s finding a helpful tutorial, listening to the latest music, or watching your favorite videos for hours on end, YouTube has something for everyone and today we couldn’t be more pleased to announce the launch of this much-anticipated channel on our platform.

In addition, the “Send to TV” feature lets customers pair a smartphone or tablet to YouTube on the Roku 3. Just connect your device to the same Wifi as your Roku, and with one click send videos to your Roku.

Roku 3 customers can start watching their YouTube subscribed channels and videos in HD by installing YouTube from the Roku Channel Store today.

It's about time!

I just ruled out Roku because it did not offer YT. I bought the WDTV instead. Happy it is doing what I needed but I have always felt the Roku is the better box.

At one time I too wanted Youtube on the Roku. But now it really isn't even needed for alot of people anymore. My Smart TV's like many has it, both my Tablet and Smartphone has it, with all kinds of functionality. (Via Chromecast, or an HDMI cable, or just the app itself if your Smart TV is compatible you can watch on your TV.) With Chromecast even HBOGO for me is actually easier using my Tablet or Phone than going to Roku to watch. (You can close a Chromecast event on the phone or tablet and it continues to stream, allowing you to use the device normally)

Wake me when YT works on the 2XS.

If all I wanted was to look at YT for some cat falling off a rooftop I can indeed see that on my computer or phone. But my use of YT has much broader horizons. First of all I wanted it in my Home Theater on the big screen using a 3D projector. Nothing Smart* about these projectors, unlike the TV panels. * :D When I use You Tube for instructionals and How to's..., like how to fix the electric window motors in my car, I use my ipad in my garage near the car. But when I want to watch a documentary in 1080p 60 in 3D, I want to see this in my Home Theater on the big screen. I had it with the PS3 but unfortunately that device only did 720 60p and as such is not supported for SBSh so no 3D off You Tube! So, it isn't just "watch You Tube" It's what programs and what quality and screen size I want to view it. "For a lot of people" YT on the phone is all it is to them. For me, the service has a complete range of uses and each dictates the best platform to watch.

Yesterday, I completed adding the IR learning of the WDTV Live to my Home Theater remote and added a set of macros to quickly switch the 3D projector in and out of SBSh. I'll keep up on the Roku. Maybe they will get the Netflix 3D content and then I'll probably switch to it, or just add it.

You mentioned not wanting to watch on the Computer or Phone, and that is exactly my point. There is no need to, in today's world those can be the delivery system, not necessarily where the picture is watched. Projector TV? Ya, I use one all the time at work, and use the HDMI input on it coming from either my laptop, tablet, or Phone. And because I can download videos to all those, it is even better yet I can watch on the big TV or anywhere. It's certainly great Roku is finally getting it, but it just isn't always the most convenient or most versatile way to watch.

Watching some DIY stuff on 61" is far easier for the two of us than on 24".

Besides, I'm game for cat videos! Didja see the one where these dogs were afraid to go past these cats? Hilarious!

"You mentioned not wanting to watch on the Computer or Phone" ( in my Home Theater, But, prefer computer screen in my office, or phone while traveling or in a public location)
Not sure what you mean, but my point is I don't want one size fits all. You Tube as well as other programing networks offer more variety of programming and often our location dictates the best way to watch that variety. I only use projector for movie theater entertainment. But will watch video on my phone if I'm in a place where anything larger is difficult or annoying to others, such as waiting in a time consuming line to get into an event or something. Out by the pool, I may use the ipad. The WDTV or Roku has quickly become my favorite way to bring these channels to my Home Theater screen. But, if I want to watch 3D Netflix or 3D Vudu, I need to revert back to my PS3. One size doesn't do all for me.

If you have a Roku 2 Version 1 device, you can put a YouTube channel on it. However, this uses the Home Up Left Right key method to access a "Secret screen" and installing a .ZIP file. Only try this if you are comfortable with doing so. Refer to these 2 sites.

www.gtvhacker.com/index.php/Exploiting_Roku Explains another hack, but does show the keystrokes to activate the hidden screen.

www.akufu.com/youtube-channel-nowtv-sky Though this mentions the NowTV Sky box (Roku LT) this works on all R2V1 boxes.

Anyone try this? With any luck?
