Hi,
I have a Canadian address and already have my equipment, but I need to get a Canadian phone number. It would only be used for this, so the cheapest would be preferred. Will be signing up with Shaw.

Thanks,
Lisa

I am a bit impatient. I found an app called Fongo World Edition. It cost $4.99. But it allows you to select a Canadian phone number. I called myself from my home phone, and it worked. I called the satellite company, but haven't done the order yet, and it answered. It's free to call Canada, but costs money to call other places. So for someone who only wants a Canadian number for their satellite, it seems to be the cheapest with no ongoing monthly charges, and no per-min charges. I guess the proof will be in the pudding after I get my account set up.

Got it activated. But it was stressful because they said I had to buy a receiver if I was new even if I already had a receiver and the installer was going to bring it. I finally got them to agree to mail it, but he said they don't usually allow that. So I bought it and it will be shipped to this place. Hopefully that doesn't mess anything up.

Sounds like you´re accomplishing your goal anyway, Congrats.
Are you activating Shaw or Bell ?
Out of curiosity what happens when you dial your Cdn phone number ? Is there any answer ? Can you activate a voice mail message ? Does it ring and ring with no answer ?
I´m not sure I buy the "you have to buy a receiver from us" story, since it is possible to buy from a 3rd party.

Hi Lisa: welcome to the board! Can you clarify your last post for me? From what I understand, you called shaw to establish service, and they told you that you need to have a new receiver sent to you, and you agreed to it. is that correct? If so, where are you having the equipment sent to? Thanks!

This is through Shaw. I said I already had a receiver and a dish and he said that all new customers have to buy a receiver through them. Then he wanted to set up installation time. I tried to be vague about it saying my schedule was funky so I wanted to call back to schedule. Then I asked about mailing the receiver, and he said that the installer would bring it. So I was getting worried. Finally go him to mail the receiver, but it's going to the address I gave, which thankfully I know the person and they will mail it to me. Then I called the activation line to activate the receiver that I already bought, and she said that if she activated it before I had the other one, I would lose a free month (which he never even told me I was getting) and I would lose the free receiver. So I may call customer service back to see if there is a way to skip the free month and free receiver and just use the one that I have.

As for the phone, I called myself from my landline, and picked it up and had a conversation with myself. The call quality to Shaw was perfect. I called back and let it ring. And it said the person is not available. Please leave a message. It took a bit, but it did show the voice mails.

That phone thing sounds good. Having a conversation with yourself :biggrin
As for the other part, I hope it works out fine, I have the impression that those CSRs are not always all the experts they should be or try to sell stuff or take promotions you don´t need or want.
Since I use a broker I don´t deal with that, maybe one day I´ll manage to get away without out, but having myself subbed to both Directv and Dish outside the US, I got pretty good at using addresses and phones and "moving" for the locals as I pleased. Everything in the name of love for satellite programming.

Now, that sounds more like it, they were trying to sell you a receiver and giving you a free month for spending your bucks on the piece of hardware you don´t need.
