A friend wants to purchase a HR20(at least I think it's a HR20 as it looks just like a HR22 but silver) from someone he knows who is switching to cable for $100. Aren't they all leased or was the 20 out before? I can't recall.

It could be an owned unit. Get the RID and call the access card department and ask them.
 
Ya, thats way too much money ... Check with D* to see if it's owned or not, if it is, tell him he needs to send it back.
If they told the guy they don't want it, you still can't activate it if it was Leased.

That's what I said. I don't know why he wants it when he has 2 HR24's. I told him to get a HR44 for the third TV or offer $40 for the receiver. I'll have him call & check to see if it's owned or not.

HR20 is about 7-8 years old, if I recall correct it debuted in late 2006 or early 2007. I'd advise against it, while it does HD-DVR it operates very slow compared to a HR24.

Is he looking for the OTA tuner by chance ?
 
Well the receiver is owned and not leased, so if he wants it he'd be good to go, although he would still get sent a new access card, which still baffles me seeing that the original cars is still perfectly good. I think he does want OTA as he has an antenna up and running already. He told me before that he'd like to "move" to LA and use OTA for our locals, then he'd have access to nets from 2 different time zones.

Then WHY in the world doesn't he just get an AM21 for (one of his) existing DVR's & be done with it??? He will end up with the same net result (of an OTA tuner) but NOT have to put up with the dog-a$$ slow performance of a 1st gen (HD) DVR...

Actually, to be fair, if the HR20 is a -700 model it's still a good DVR. Faster than any of the DVRs that followed, except for the HR24. I still have my HR20-700, bought one month after they became available. The HR20-100 though is best avoided.

I agree, I still have my HR20-700 as well, sitting in the closet.
 
My HR20-700 is still using the original drive. It has always been connected to a UPS which I believe helps.
