Video Game Deals

Someone at cheapassgamer got a screen shot of Microsoft's Digital Black Friday deals that were accidentally posted and then quickly removed. For the most part you can do better on retail copies but if you prefer digital at least this is something. I will probably pick up the Titanfall season pass for $6.24.

I might buy Shadow of Mordor for $29.99 too. It's cheaper at retail but I guess I'll pay the extra $5 for the convenience of digital if Steam or PSN don't offer a better price this weekend.

SOM so far is pretty damn fun. It's like Batman: AC but being able to kill is so much more satisfying and the magic abilities are fun too. I also am looking forward to getting more into the enemy captain/warlord stuff.

Free Plus games officially announced for December. No surprises for PS4, but I like the selection for PS3 for a change.

Injustice Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition (PS4 - but apparently not crossbuy with other PS platforms)
Secret Ponchos (PS4)
Hitman Trilogy (PS3)
Deadly Premonition Director's Cut (PS3)
Final Horizon (Vita)
Titan Attacks (Vita/PS4/PS3)

I played both Hitman Absolution and Blood Money about this time last year and came close to buying the earlier Hitman games on GOG. Glad I didn't now. I wasn't too familiar with Deadly Premonition, but reading up on it, sounds like something I'll like if the Director's Cut did indeed clean up some of the technical issues of the original release. I'll probably take a pass on those Vita games.

Injustice is definitely worth picking up. Makes me feel a little dumb for actually buying it on Steam, but for those that like DC Comics and/or fighting games it's definitely worth taking a look.

The Steam sale is live but they seem to be doing it a little different this time. I don't see any flash sales or community choice stuff. It looks like it's all going to just be daily deals. Also, none of the games I have on my wishlist have great prices yet. I'm sure that will change as we get new daily deals over the weekend though.

Edit: There are some good deals. They just aren't on the games I was targeting. $20.39 for The Evil Within is the best advertised price I have seen on that game so far.

Sadly it appears that The Evil Within isn't much of a catch, and according to Metacritic the PC version is the worst of them all, unless you do some modding to it. You're probably better off picking up the HD version of RE4 for $11.99

All the big vendors have started their BF sales. There's too many to mention here. Best off just looking up http://www.twitter.com/videogamedeals and scrolling through that. Some of note are that the MS store has a number of decent deals on One games as well as a cheap Kinect Bundle, Walmart has a MCC bundle as well as a bundle with an extra game, Target is giving gift cards along with much of their stuff, including a $15 card with SSBU and a $70 card with the AC:U Bundle. These are just a few of them. Amazon also have sales live as well.

It looks like WB Games really wants to push out SOM this Christmas season. Nearly all the retailers have it for at LEAST 50% off. I'm enjoying the game myself.

I keep almost pulling the trigger on it but I have lots of Steam credit and I think they will get on the bandwagon too.

Edit: It's available from Amazon for $20 on PC. I hope Steam matches that price this weekend.

I ended up picking up SOM from Amazon at 50% off. Then thanks to a leftover gift card as well as AMEX credits, I ended up paying in total $1.12. If Gamefly had been smart they'd put their "Keep It" rates down to match what BF sales are doing, as it would cost me $43 to keep SOM from them.

Really though the game is a LOT of fun. It's reminiscent of the older Assassin's Creed games, with the fun stealth play as well as the great combo based combat of the Arkham games. Honestly had it not been for the overwhelmingly positive reviews I would not have bothered to pick this one up, and if anything, its Tolkien license turned me off because I stopped caring about Middle Earth right about the time that Frodo and company returned home in the "Return of the King" movie. I haven't even seen the new Hobbit movies. Hell I don't even care much about the plot of this game. It seems to be a simple revenge story. Some jerk kills you and your family and you're supposed to kill him back seems to be the main plot, but it's the combat and atmosphere that keeps me coming back. It's definitely worth a look if you have a modern console (the 360 and PS3 versions are getting horrible reviews for looking awful and being full of bugs, as well as having a nerfed nemesis system.)

Tales From the Borderlands is available on the Xbox One Marketplace for $14.99. I'm pretty anxious to play this and I don't think it will be available much cheaper than that for a while so I bought it.

I also bought Peggle 2 for $4.80 and the Titanfall Season Pass for $6.42. If you don't already have Titanfall they are selling the Deluxe Edition which includes the game and season pass for $12.49. That's a pretty nice deal.

Strangely I still haven't bought anything from the Steam Sale. I'm not sure if they are holding out on their biggest deals until the last day or something. Whatever the reasoning, everyone else is beating Steam's prices on the games I want.

I have a bunch of Steam credit so I'm still waiting to see if they do anything for Shadow of Mordor but right now it's cheaper on Xbox Live, PSN, and Amazon. They also would have gotten my money for Tales From the Borderlands but Microsoft beat them.

Well I missed out on a dream deal. Newegg was selling the PS4 console only on eBay for $329 (new, not a refurb) late Wednesday/early Thursday. I only got wind of the deal after they had sold all 7200+ units. If I had got in on that deal, I could've gotten a couple of games I actually really wanted for ~$30 (like Shadow of Mordor) with the money I was saving by not getting one of the lackluster (for me) BF bundles (LBP3 is as big of a mess as Unity and the story mode is short; and don't get me started on the other new gen system bundle that features two last gen ports :p).

Even though I know I could get the Xbox One bundle this weekend for $329, which does include games I'm interested in (once fixed), I figured by the time I get an extra controller and/or a play and charge kit and a year of Gold, I'm at $400+ anyway (I already have an extra DS4 controller and my Plus membership is good until Oct 2015), not to mention the 15 or so PS4 Plus games I already have in my download queue I'd be sacrificing by switching to another platform.

I tried to hold out and use my Steam credit but I just caved in and bought it from Amazon too. $20 for the PC version was just too good to pass up.

I actually think the GTA V and The Last of Us PS4 bundle is pretty awesome if you've never played those games. I played them both on PS3 so it wouldn't be so good for me. They may have originally been last gen games but they sure don't look last gen on PS4. From the footage I've seen it looks like both studios put in the work to make these true PS4 games.

Not only that but they are both probably better than any other game available on the PS4. They are probably the two highest reviewed games of last year. Again, if you have already played these games it's not a very good bundle. If you haven't I would think it's pretty solid.

It turns out that Microsoft does the Tell Tale games a little differently than PSN and Steam. The season pass of Tales From the Borderlands I just bought for $15 isn't the full game. They treat the first episode as the base game and the season pass is add on content.

I made the purchase from Smartglass on my phone without reading the fine print so I guess it's my own fault. It does say episode 1 required in the details at the bottom. It wasn't clearly labeled as DLC though. Steam puts a purple box around big bold letters to let you know if something is DLC. Also, buying the season pass of Tell Tale games on PSN and Steam gets you the full game.

Instead of saving $10 like I thought I ended up only saving $5 after I bought episode 1. I also would have preferred to get the game on PC if it weren't for the good deal I thought I was getting on Xbox.

Well now you know, and remember..

I just picked up the South Park game for $13.59 in the Steam sale. I haven't watched the show much for the last several years but I hear good things about the game and I know all the characters.
