I am considering getting Directv. I see in my neighborhood that some new residents are getting the more compact dish with the combination LNB for positions 99, 101 and 103 while other new customers still get the larger dish with room for 5 LNBs although only 3 are mounted. Since the dish would need to be mounted just by my front door, I would certainly prefer the more compact design. Is this matter of programming requested or just what the installer happens to have on hand? Is there a way to request a particular dish if ordering through the web site? This information would be appreciated in making a decision.

That would explain a lot. Most of my neighbors would want Spanish programming. I however would not need it, besides I can pick up 23 Spanish channels with an antenna.

Good point, he should be able to get the HD c h annels, why would he need the SD ones ?
Unless he wants to use them in real bad weather situations.
Hold all calls, we have a winner.

The SD duplicates are on 101 anyway so he would not need 119 to get them, unless his SD locals were on 119..

The SR duplicates are on the 101 ?
When I looked it up last night his SD signal came from the 119.

I think there was 2 channels, maybe CW or something like that that he picks up from the 101.

I would like to see the cities that are on the 119 migrate over to the 101, that would help everyone that still needs the SD.

You misunderstand me. I was commenting that in general SD comes from 101 so "SD duplicates" come from 101 because they are the same. His posts don't tell us where he is so we don't know his SD locals are on 119. And if his SD locals were on 119 then everyone in his neighborhood would have a 5LNB dish.

Nah ...

Not nearly enough bandwidth and local spotbeams at 101 to accommodate both 101 and 119.

101W, D4S and D9S -- delivers 44 local spotbeam x'pndrs distributed over 26 spotbeams of geographical coverage.

119W, D7S -- delivers 37 local spotbeam x'pndrs distributed over 29 (28 in use) spotbeams of geographical coverage.

No way to fit all the later into the prior ...

Not necessarily. Here in CT our sd locals are on 119, but many people have a 3 lnb dish. 119 is fairly low, so there are los issues. Apparently Directv has waived the requirement to have a 5 lnb dish in areas where the sd locals are on 119 because I see a lot of them around here. I'd guess it's around 25%.

I presumed he was in El Paso, Texas from his profile, but that may not be where he's talking about.
I hadn't considered that.

Wow, I didn't realize there was that much on the 119 anymore.

My post about migrating to the 101 was partly selfish as I would then be able to get the locals where I Vacation.

While keeping in mind that the HD version IS already available to them on a Sat that they do get. The 99 or 103.

Why would anyone want SD locals when they can get them in HD.

Granted weather situations are a good argument , but really how much longer do you loose a Ka band signal vs a ku band signal during bad weather?

It's not noticeable to me

It all depends on the situation.
If the storm is bad enough that I lose my Sat signal, I turn on the OTA antenna .
