Hey all,

I bought what somebody told me was an active Scientific Atlanta/PowerVu satellite receiver last week, by being active I mean it would be able to get AFN (American Forces Network) until the time the subscription runs out - seems that I have been conned as it never turned up (yes it was someone on this website)..........I will get some of my money back as I used paypal but not all of it........

SO - this means I am desperate for an active AFN (American Forces Network) satellite receiver over here in England..........if anyone knows of anyone who might be able to help then I would be very greatful if you could help..........most likely it would be somebody in the military but I know of no one and I have had no luck looking for US military forums for Europe, etc...

My email address is - nick@nickbrace.com

Thanks alot to you all.

Nick

If you are eligible to receive AFN, you should know the rules and the procedures to get a valid AFN decoder.

If you are not eligible, then you are attempting to steal an encrypted signal which is HACKING.

If you serve, then you deserve!

Actually thats not hacking at all, the definition of hacking is 'modifying existing hardware or software to enable you to watch encypted signals'...........I am in no way attempting to hack PowerVu (which has not been done yet as its soooo secure) but rather buy one with a subscription - this would only put money in the pocket of somebody who is 'serving' and so everyone would be happy :D

In Germany the AFN Network is thrown out on UHF signals into the air so lots of Germans pick it up with an antenna........here in England though you need a satellite receiver to pick it up from satellite 'Hotbird' at 13 degrees east...

Thanks for your reply, very informative bud,

Nick

I'd rather not get into a legal argument.

AFN does have a weak signal over a UHF channel that can be picked up if you live near the intended housing areas. But most housing areas now have cable. The AFN signals over satellite are multi channel.

The decoder can only be purchased through the PX/BX (AAFES) by those eligible individuals who serve overseas. The decoder can only be authorized for the period that the individual is serving overseas. If you illegally obtain and use one of these boxes, you are violating the intent and spirit.

Oh yeh - I know how you legally get one dude...........you should check out the US Military 'Stars and Stripes' publication - there are countless members of the US Airforce selling there receivers with a subscription (mainly in Germany but also Italy and UK)........I guess there are quite a few troops who are violating that spirit you mentioned, hehe - or more likely they would like some extra cash in there pockets ay :D

Thanks for all your help.

Why would only the Air Force members sell their receivers? Surely some of them must be Army, Navy or Marines!

I said Airforce as the only two remaining 'decent' sized bases in the UK are for US Airforce.......I am sure Germany has army, navy, etc, etc as it has countless US bases - a couple of which are apparently the size of large towns. I guess they too sell them but less so in UK due to troop numbers........

excuse my ingnorance but why would want an AFN receiver even with a sub
and whatever months is left on it?

if it is american programming there are other ways of getting those channels.

Hey buddy,

I want an AFN receiver as its the only way to get alot of American programming (although most big shows are on UK networks now), most important of all is all the ESPN prgramming on AFN's Sports channel!

Other ways......I have been told not - the main American satellites seem to be under the horizon........then there are the further reaching satellites you can link up with such as 'Arabsat' - I already subscribe to that and get 'Orbit ESPN' which is terrible, gives me Sportscenter every morning but not much in terms of live sport!

The only other option I have considered is internet tv - there are companies who are starting this but I run a 512 Mb connection........you would need at least 2 Mb to do this!

All my relatives thought I should participate on wheel of Fortune, since I blurted out the answers before they were solved, they also thought you could just walk up to the studio gain admittance and walk away with a new car.

The Channel is no longer OTA in Gtmo, my friends and relatives miss it.

Oh boy - you are one of those are you :D

When growing up I watched Wheel of Fortune with my parents, etc - my mother would blurt out the words before my Dad and me could even open our mouths, dont think we ever had a change at beating her!

AFN is not really good, lots of repeats and older stuff are showing, i have a Japanese friend who is in the U.S army who told me everything, lots of patriotic crap...

Why don't you get Arabic Orbit package?

I have it and they have ESPN USA full coverage 24/7

Also you get lots of other american channels like ABC, CBS, America Plus and more...

Dude - you are WAY off base.........I am a member of Orbit and the ESPN coverage is awful - apart from Sportscenter every morning at 7am its crap.

AFN have all live shows - they show Lost, Medium, CSI, etc, etc at the same time as in the States - Orbit have nearly all old shows.........

Just to note AFN does have radio that you should be able to get if you have a shortwave w/ a ssb. I think I managed to catch a NASCAR race one time. I think the nearest broadcast to you would be from iceland...they actually broadcast in most of the world.
