What I just want to know is how is every Dish subscriber dealing with price increase? Just starting get Dish about mid December and after 5 wks price goes up. Called Dish. No movement. I was a Directv customer 8 years and never raised price in current contract. Thinking of switching back to Directv. Thoughts? Thanks Jeff

Well, D*s increase was more than the E* increase this time, so I don't think going back will help you much.

I don't think that is what he meant. I think he meant that it didn't change while he was under a contract (eg the 18 month commitment).

This last increase was very big. My bill was going up $14. I don't mind a few dollars, but this was too much. I switched to D* after having E* for 8 years. I am getting some discounts from D*, but even after that ends, it will still be cheaper than E*. It was not an easy choice to make, but that jump was just too much. Even cable never went up that much in a year.

Last year my bill went up $3 and I could live with that, but $14 was too much for me.

I downgraded my Dish package when I seen the increase. What done it for me was the fact that they increased much more than the package tiers.
I am in no position to pour any more money into the "boob tube".
When ever Denver area finally gets the DTV tower up and running, I will cancel and just go with OTA.

Just my 2 cents on this matter. It's only TV.

Yea, but where else you gonna get 28 HD channels?

You pay less with Directv, you get less too!

I may not have as many HD channels, but most of the Voom ones I rarely watched. I get more of my locals in HD on D* than E* offered and I watch those more than the Voom channels. D* will be adding more HD this year. D* is the better value for me. It was hard for me to make the switch, but I can say I am glad I did. I am also going to be able to get MLB EI. I am not sure that E* is going to be able to offer that. I have not regretted switching and for the first year I am saving quite a bit of money with the promotions that D* offered.

For me, the $14 price increase pushed me into exploring other options. If the increase had not been so high, I would have stayed with E*, instead it made me look into cable and D*. I found D* was a good move for me to make.

Had I stayed with DirecTV another year, I would have been paying roughly $8.00 more per month starting this February, compared to three years ago...and that was with a drop from Total Choice Plus early last year down to Total Choice.

That's why I made the move to Dish in January. Both providers have gone rate increase happy in recent years, but Dish currently offers more value than Direct when it comes to the lower tiers.

Just let me get the HD channels by themselves for a set price and keep all the SD crap that I NEVER watch and would rather not pay for. I would pay $30 a month for HD only and no SD.

I have the 250 and would like to downgrade too but so many of my favorites arn't on the 200 or less.

It's actually $34.95 month for HD only. Some may even pay only $20 a month for MPeg2 only feeds using a non-vip receiver. But I don't think DISH will sell it that way anymore. I guess I am one of the lucky ones or (cough, cough) smart ones who took advantage of it when it was available.:D

I find myself downgrading packages the past few years after the price increases - dropping channels I do not watch anyways. I dropped all the movie packages a few years ago then I dropped the superstations, additional receiver, and the warranty this year. It more than offsets their price increases but dropped it as far as I am comfortable with and I am sure this is the same with others as well.

I may be wrong, but I find it very hard to believe that you had the same price for 8 straight years with anyone.:no
You are correct..There indeed have been many increases since i became a customer 9 years ago...
To be fair, the number of channels has increased dramatically..

Like death and taxes, yearly rate increases are a fact of life. E* prices arent a 'great' deal, but pretty much on par with the cost of everything else in the world for what you get. Cell phone and Internet service arent cheap either. No reason satellite service should be any different.

Although... IMHO HBO and Showtime have always been overpriced. :D

For packages I want E* is less than D*.

Compared to cable in my area(Mediacom), E* is a much better deal for the money. Mediacom is pricing themselves out of business. Even with extra charge for not having Mediacom's tv, Mediacom HSI & phone + E* for tv is less than having Mediacom for everything.

Claude, yes E* gives you a lot, has a great DVR (622) and a great program guide; however, their last increase was still a bit much. I have Verizon's FIOS internet (WoW!) and could have had their TV service with the unrivaled PQ long ago, but I just liked E*'s offerings better - and I felt they were a better value. Now, I am watching both and keeping my options open...

Just my two cents.

I think its crazy how E* gave the greatest price increase to their customers paying the most money i.e. the Platinum Package. I had that but I found that it was beyond my threshold. I was willing to pay $100 or so for it but when it became 125 (or so) I was traumatized. I did the DVR Advantage and it saves me 50 - 60 bucks a month. Granted no premiums but I've found that I don't really miss them. I'm sure Sopranos will be on A&E by 2012.

If you have a DVR then you do not need all those movie channels. Just add one movie package for a month once in a while and record a bunch of movies on it then shut the movie package off at the end of the month or two weeks or whenever. You can do it for one or two weeks and only get charged a partial month (makes up for $5 downgrade fee) and have a lot of movies on the hard drive waiting to be watched without having to wait for them to come on. This might not be a good option for some that may watch a lot of movies but they repeating them a bit though so that would not make much difference. I can see more people doing this when they get the external hard drive on the 622 as there would be lots of storage for doing this. Dish gets $6 a month for the DVR function anyways so its not like they are losing much, they get the money one way or another.
