    New Satellite Tax in Illinois?

...who has received their first bill for 2024? I just received an email for my January 6 to Feb 6 2024 bill and noticed that Dish has a new sales tax line item that was never on there before. (I pulled up my previous 4 bills just to make sure I wasn't crazy!) I am not aware of Illinois...

EchoStar/Dish raises doubts about 'ability to continue as a going concern'

Do you mean tax-loss harvesting? Tax-loss harvesting can make a loss less painful if it happens, but since taxes are a fraction of gains or losses, I’m having trouble seeing where someone would generate intentional losses just to tax-loss harvest.

Yes, the tax attorney who is either a bad tax attorney or is intentionally trying to mislead people. Correct. There is literally no other alternative.

    New Satellite Tax in Illinois?

Yes .50 cents on my bill from 12/16 to 1/15/2024. I guess JB stuck us with another tax. No tax on the previous bills. I would say it's a state tax.

Email from Amazon about Prime Video

No, Business is $60. The difference between Business and Gold Star is that Business doesn’t pay sales tax on tax items. Executive is a whole different level.

    HBO Max/Discovery+ Merger

Don’t be so sure. Yes, there are tax specialists- CPAs as well as lawyers. And a few who are both. In any event, all of us in accounting must have a certain minimum level of tax knowledge. And this write off business ain’t rocket science. The fiddling comes from allocating costs to different...

    HBO Max/Discovery+ Merger

Dude - They would have gotten that tax deduction over the depreciable life of the film anyway. It is all a timing issue. I don't know who Steven Chung is, but he is either a very bad tax attorney or he is being intentionally deceptive. There is no other explanation.

    New Satellite Tax in Illinois?

...that is the case. I am in DuPage county, about 30 miles west of Chicago - I will have to dig to see. And yes, my line item is also "State/Local Tax (Sales)". It is such a small percentage of the bill though. Nowhere near the county + state sales tax, which is around 8% here in DuPage county.

Again, you are answering more then a wrote, all I posted was, from a article, they are still getting Tax Write Offs, then I post something from a Tax Attorney, which you are not, then insult him without knowing who he is and how good at his job he might be. According to just a quick search...

Hence why I asked the question, any tax knowledge I learned when going for my degree is long gone from my brain. But you finally answered, they do get a tax benefit /write-off when they pull content, which is all I have posted.

I'm in Cook County which has a higher tax rate than DuPage county.

This, read this from your post above. Please. Then pause and read it again. From your quote above: "As such, it is not as though there is a tax benefit being obtained here without a non-tax (i.e. financial) cost." This is what I have been saying post after post. The write-off did not create...

    HBO Max/Discovery+ Merger

I'm sorry, but you obviously don't understand how the corporate tax rules work. I'm a CPA. I work in the media and entertainment space. I'm well aware of how this works. It is a timing difference, nothing else. It does not generate "additional" tax benefits. It is a shift from a Deferred tax...

But that is tax they don't have to pay now, so they can use it to pay down debt or invest in something new. Having the money now is (likely) worth more to them than getting the depreciation over time. There is a benefit to the company, if not to all parties involved.
