Disney+ / Hulu / Etc...+ to rein in Password Sharing

Insiders tell me Apple is playing a very long game with the TV service -- to the point that they aren't even calculating profitability yet. Well, I am sure some accountant is, but the execs don't even want to be told. They are also very interested in overall profitability of their services...

https://www.wsj.com/business/media/disney-dis-q2-earnings-report-2024-300990de?mod=hp_lead_pos6 The most interesting thing I found from the article: Excluding sports, Disney’s streaming business earned a profit of $47 million for the quarter. Once again, sports are both the savior and death...

    Buyout bid for Paramount

Who was your provider? DOCSIS 2.0 only went up to 40Mb down, and DOCSIS 3.0 didn't come out until 2006. TimeWarner Cable didn't offer speeds over 20Mb where I am until the late 2000s.

Bally Sports RSNs Are Reportedly Preparing For Bankruptcy

It isn't like real journalism is that much better. We lost all the copy editors from the newsrooms at the newspaper company I worked for back during the Great Recession. Everyone was supposed to check each others work, but it was not the same as having dedicated people to do it.

    Roku decides to ruin pausing

Neither are TCL and HiSense anymore, or at least not only low end. Ratings from CNET, rtings.com, Digital Trends, etc. are quite high. Not quite as good as Sony/LG, but surprisingly close. They don't have to beat Sony/LG, but just be close enough and a lower cost to win a ton of customers...

    Roku decides to ruin pausing

What do you think Sony et. al. thought of TCL and HiSense a few years back? Now that is all anyone is talking about as the "best TVs." I am not saying I am going to buy a Roku, TCL, or HiSense, but things can change fast in a low-margin business like TVs.

    Buyout bid for Paramount

...she held out hope that a big buyer—maybe a technology giant—would emerge to take the whole company off her hands... This almost never happens. Tech companies are usually too smart to buy messes like existing media companies. This is why Apple never bought Disney despite everyone seemingly...

Traditional Providers Losses, 1st Quarter 2024 Edition

Not necessarily. I have orange coax going to my house from Spectrum, and it is definitely just regular coax with an orange sheath. My brother, who had fiber service from Spectrum, had a black fiber running to his house

Traditional Providers Losses, 1st Quarter 2024 Edition

It is at least worth calling them up to ask. My parents were getting only 100Mb on their Spectrum connection, despite paying for 300. After they complained, Spectrum sent out a tech with a new box, and things got a whole lot better. Part of that was the upgrade from N wireless to AC for...

Traditional Providers Losses, 1st Quarter 2024 Edition

Sure. I was simply referring to my earlier prediction that FWA internet isn't going to stay cheap for long. That said, I do like that it is an option as I think competition keeps prices lower. Now that Google Fiber is in my neighborhood, I don't expect AT&T to raise their prices any time...

What the Cable Industry used to say about Cord Cutting

It is always nice to see a fellow pedant active online. Cutting the cord originally meant ditching cable for OTA, so it made sense. Then it meant that plus watching Netflix, which ok, sure. Now it means primarily subscribing to streaming, even if it is really just cable-like services...
