Time remaining doesn't match ACTUAL time!.. 522

I've also noticed the "time remaining" doesn't seem to get updated right away when you delete an event. Sometimes I'll delete something, and the time remaining doesn't change much. But then I'll go back to the event list a few minutes later and more space/time is freed up.

    Do you tip your installer?

The installer I had was fantastic, and although I practically tried shoving some extra cash into his hand, he would not take it. Amazing. I wish I had more business to send his way...

    Dish, Direct Tv or Cable?

Ask a question like this, and you'll get as many different opinions as replies. But be wary when people say: "Company X's picture quality is better than Company Y." I've used both. They're the same. Personally, I had bad experience with DirecTV's customer support, so I switched to Dish. But...

    Can't people read anymore?

I imagine most of the people bidding don't understand the significance of a box with a balance on it. They probably figure, "Well, that was someone else. Why would Dish charge me?" If I hadn't been frequenting these forums for a while, I might think the same thing. :no

    Switched back to Dish Network.

The only thing I miss about D* is that the guide on my old receiver used to color-code shows by category (movies, sports, etc.). Such a simple thing, but came in very handy.

So desperate for NBR, considering ditching 721 for 522

This post might fall into the category of "easy for you to say," but now that I've had NBR on the 522 for a few weeks, I'm not sure why this feature gets so much hype. Maybe it's because the shows I watch don't change times very often. In any case, it hasn't "revolutionized" the way I use the...

    recording to dvd

I believe this is copy protection. In any case, this has been discussed many times in the forum before. Try searching for an existing thread.

Anyone tried plugging it into a PC?

name based recording; two things not to do and one additional confusing thing

I assume by "zero sum" you mean a search that returns no results. If that's the case, I've performed such searches since the NBR update without the problems you described. Although I've never done it via the menu. I always press Search on the remote. Don't want to try it your way and tempt fate. ;)

    Ok Well..............You guys were right.

I've had mine for months in dual mode. Also very few problems.

Wanting to switch from DirecTV -> Dish

Sorry, no. You need a new dish. But the good news is you don't have to install it. Installation is included in most packages. And if you get a decent installer like I did, they may offer to take your old dish down for no extra charge. (Well, I guess there's something in it for them, too: it...

811 zoom function on 4:3 TV

I'm not sure about the behavior on 4:3 TVs, but I can say that the online manual is out of date with respect to picture modes. There are more than it indicates.

    Dish VS DirecTV

I'm also a DirecTV refugee who moved to Dish. No major complaints, and I'm happy to have made the switch. My 811 and 522 receivers behave nicely most of the time. But yeah, try it and decide for yourself. For all you know, we could be Echostar plants. :D

    Dumpin' the Dish!!

Bob: Can I ask where in southeast Mass. you live? I'm in Franklin, and the picture quality of Comcast digital here is much worse than Dish on a 57" HDTV. My folks are in North Attleboro, and the same applies there. If your PQ from Dish is worse than Comcast, I'm thinking it is probably an...

Yeah, I get the switch error message on my 522 maybe once a month or so. Doesn't seem to affect anything.

Any word on Boston locals? I'm still waiting for the upgrade.

    dvr 522

If the 522 is too loud, it's almost certainly the fan. When I first got mine, I had it in a cabinet and the fan ran almost constantly. I moved it to open-air, and now it's as quiet as can be.

    Software

All you need to do is make sure both tuners are turned off before you go to bed. (Some people say you don't even need to do that.) If any updates are available, they'll be downloaded overnight (3am by default, I think).

I want the 522 but worried...

Personally, I'd suggest taking what you read on this forum and others with a large grain of salt. I think many people with legitimate complaints use sites like this one to express their dissatisfaction, but it doesn't necessarily mean there isn't a silent majority out there who are happy...

How do I get Dolby 5.1 on my 522 DVR?

No, the 522 should go near the "better" TV, since S-Video and DD optical outputs are provided only for the TV1 output. I have a 522 and an 811. Both boxes are located in the living room (where the HD TV and audio receiver are situated). The TV2 output is wired to the bedroom, which is just a...

Hmm... I'm tempted to say something here about "compelling content," but I'll refrain. ;)

How do I get Dolby 5.1 on my 522 DVR?

Your options do get slightly better with an 811. Several of the HD channels broadcast DD 5.1 regularly. Also, depending on where you live, some of your local digital stations may broadcast DD 5.1. Here in Boston, the ABC station does regularly. (I gotta say, that Lost show looks and sounds...

Possible to get a "Neat" Install?

It depends greatly on the installer. I've worked with several, and they varied widely in skills and customer-focus. But I think it helps if you have a clear idea of what you want and how you want it set up before they get there.
