    Power Management - worth it?

I used to believe all power strips and surge protectors were a rip off. Then, we had a large power surge. We (and neighbors) lost tv's refrigerators, spas, computers, etc. Every electronic devise I had on surge-protected power strips survived with no damage, although every power strip was...

    Capabilities

I was hoping someone would have replied by now since I'd like to know also - I know these guys know their S* about D and the competitors. I know one or two answers but they may be out of date. The HD set would have a reciever (HR20 is the model I have) that allows you to record 2 programs and...

Does DVR receiver cause bills to increase automatically (even without the 'service')?

OMG, Philhu. Almost certainly, someone at my water supply district is going to see this. Then I'll be paying the extra fee too.

    Black screen problem

My HR20 has worked fine since I got it, quite a while ago. But, the last three times I've tried recording Last Comic Standing, all I end up with is a black screen for the entire duration - no sound, no picture. Works on everthing else, it's just this one show it seems! Does anyone know if...

What's the deal with D* guide ads?

Yea, I figure D* will do whatever makes them the most $. And since I don't think enough people will complain, much less switch to a different service, I think you're right - better get used to it. But, I for one would switch to Dish to get rid of the ads (for however long that would last)...

What's the deal with D* guide ads?

Just an update. Last night I did send an email to D* as sugested by dcowboy. This morning D* called me and said that they have been receiving a lot of complaints and are considering weather or not to keep the ads going. She said if the decision is to keep the ads they will most likely give us...

Thanks, I did send an email.

What's the deal with D* guide ads?

Obviously, content is important. But years ago, when I switched from D to Comcast, content was about the same. Even today, based on what I watch, there's little, if any, difference between Dish, Com and D*. I'm surprised some do not care about ads in their guide. I guess that's why D*...

What's the deal with D* guide ads?

At least not yet. I disagree with Charper1, ads are annoying and with all other things equal, I'd choose the service without the ads. Certainly, its one of the things to consider when choosing a service. In fact, years ago I switched from Comcast just to get away from the annoying guide format.

What's the deal with D* guide ads?

My tv guide (HR20) started including adds a couple days ago. It there any way to turn these off? If not, does Dish's guide contain ads?

Direct tv Equipment Purchase at store?

I'm sure you can buy the DTV recievers at Best Buy or CC. A while ago you could but the Slimline 5-lnb HD dish. If you can't buy the dish in the store, you can certainly buy it on line at numerous sites like Sadoun.com. There is no reason you can't install yourself. Like you, Iv'e...

    HR20 red light ???

Once in a while, the front panel light that turns on to indicate that a program is being recorded turns red. I notice this once a week or so, and it stays on for several seconds. What does this red light mean?

    Jericho - cancelled

I liked it until recently when it began to preach their views. Stopped watching it a couple weeks ago - perhaps a lot of viewers didn't appreciate the preaching.

Audio Sync problems on Portland Or HD locals

I've had the same problem over the years. Usually worst when a station has just started HD and seems to go away with time. However, I've had the problem several times in the last few weeks, and each time was able to fix it by pressing pause and then the play buttoms on my HR20 remote. I guess...

    New Intallation

Just make sure it works before he leaves. Try recording two channels at once. If this is your first dvr, ask him to run you through it. They are amazing :)

Buying a receiver from Best Buy question

They waived my $50 fee. I bought the DVR at best buy, hooked it up, called D*, and they turned it on for free. But, they did send me a box to return my old H20, postage pre-paid by them.

What kind of deal can I get for coming back to DirecTV

That's a really good deal. If you're willing to go with direct credit card charging you should be able to another $50 off. My son just hooked up and he also got a $10/mo HP discount since his girlfriend works at HP. Lastly, you should be able to get another $50 off if someone refers you (both...

Slimline install possible to side of house?

D* installer installed mine to the side of the house. It's been my experience that the installer will want to do it as easily possible. Assuming a good line of site, it's easiest to mount from the ground than going up on a roof. I'm sure the installer will put the slimline wherever you want...

Slimline install possible to side of house?

Sure you can mount it to a wall. I actually prefer to mount the dish where you can easily touch it. Especially in snow areas, it's nice to be able to clear snow and ice from the dish.

I had the same problem with my HR20 and 72" Sammy. The problem fixed istelf (I guess via D download). I can not see any difference between the HDMI and Component cables.

Rear Projection TVs a thing of the past?

I spend a lot of time in TV stores. My local BB sums it up. Just a year or 2 ago, there were rows of rear projection, at least one row to CRTs, and only a handful of large Plasmas and LCD, both of which were faily expensive. Today, there are zero CRTs, perhaps 6 rear projections (just a...
