Why is it so much more expensive than cable?

In my case, the combination of Directv and Bellsouth DSL was significantly cheaper than Comcast Cable+High Speed internet. They had a deal to discount the Directv by $10 per month. Right now, I'm still only paying $68 per month for Total Choice (no locals, old plan), DVR service, 1 extra box...

DirectTV Amazing deal as a new customer

I saw a new Directv add last night on G4 and they were advertising zero startup costs, so maybe deals like this will become more common. They are starting to view cable as their main competitor and startup costs will always hurt them in that department.

what version of the hr20 will i recieve

In the last month or so, I had 2 HR20s installed. Both were 100s models. I'm glad of that too, because I like having the quieter, cooler model.

    Ch 77 Nghc

The other day, I had my Tivo set to record the #5 preview. I came home and saw the record light on, so I tuned in. Found it to be a black screen. I told the Tivo to stop recording and suddenly, there was a picture! It even let me rewind back to the beginning. I saw the #6 preview was...

    Ch 77 Nghc

I've tried to record the NGHC feed 3 or 4 times now and every time, it gets a parial recording of 0 minutes. Nothing there. Has anyone been able to actually record this damn thing yet?

Sure they can, just give us a product with no bugs! (and have 2 buffers)

    HR20-700 Update

Just curious, I'm an HR10 Tivo holdout. Is the HR20 worth owning yet? By the amount of posts and bugs reported at dbsTalk, you'd think it was worthless. I don't have time to read the thousands of threads there, So...does this thing do what its supposed to do yet? Record reliably? Tune in...

My Hr10-250 just received the updated 6.3a software last night :)

I don't think the upgrade authorization is dependent on the phone number dialed. From what I've read elsewhere, the authorization is dependent on your access card # or the box ID#. Each day, D* authorizes a range of #s and if your box/card is in that range, you receive the update. That explains...

My Hr10-250 just received the updated 6.3a software last night :)

Got my 6.3a upgrade this morning. For all you guys forcing calls and rebooting: No need to reboot until you see "Pending Restart" in the phone status. You are wasting your time otherwise. I like the speed improvment, but otherwise, the 6.3 features are nothing to rave about, but then again...

    OTA scan on HR10

Usually when this happens, its a problem with the brodcast station's PSIP generator. It will probably be temporary. I had this happen with the FOX station in Atlanta before. It was resolved within a day or so.

Fox sports south in HD ??

Dag nabit! Up till now, there was no reason for me to get the MPEG4 stuff. I was happily enjoying my perfect OTA feed and my HDTivo. Now what? I'm not giving up my Tivo just to get this feed. Hurry up HR20!!!!! I want my Braves in HD! Right now, I only get about 1 in 3 games in HD (home games...

    HR10-250 vs. RCA DTC210

I had an RCA-DTC210 and I have no idea what this guy is talking about. I used the RCA for about a year and had it set always output 1080i, which matches my TV. I don't remember any way to squashing/condensing the picture on HD channels. On the SD channels, you had the option to use one of the...

    101 Sat Gone

If you start seeing problems at different times of the day and/or after viewing for a few hours, its the LNB. I had mine go out once already. It would work in the cool mornings, but not in the hot evenings.

    Fox net buy Turner South

It would be very nice if Fox passes along the HD feed of the sporting events to D*. Currently, only TWC gets the HD feed. I'm spoiled watching the Braves on TBS in HD (OTA). The games on Turner South have looked terrible in the past. Same with the Hockey games. I'll be hoping.

What's up with Fox showing 16:9 programming in 4:3?

In the Atlanta area, I would recommend the Channelmaster 4228 over anything RadioShack sells. Since you don't need low VHF (for now at least), the CM4228 does great (even on WXIA-DT, ch10). You can the the CM4228 for less than $50 if you shop around. Of course, mounting accessories are extra...

    HD-DVR Speaker Connection Query

Actually, There is only 1 set of analog audio outputs, one TOSLINK output, and 1 composite video output on the HD-DVR. Of course there is also the S-video, component, and HDMI output too.

what hdtv antenna does directv install for $50?

Antennaweb only lists the main digital channel. If you can receive the main channel, you get all the sub-channels too (9-2). If antennaweb thinks you are too far or there are major obstaces (like a mountain) in the way, it won't list the channels. You didn't tell us how far you are from...

    HD Hockey tonight??

We also got the Redwings and Blues on HDnet tonight at 8pm. That's what I'm talking about! This is one of the most bitter rivalries in all of hockey. They've met each other in the playoffs just about every year for the last 10 years and many series have went to the 7th game. Always a good game...

    Ebay Receiver question

I've bought several receivers from Ebay and/or Overstock auctions. I've had no problem having D* activate them. You will have to buy an access card from D* ($20) unless the receiver come with a unopened "virgin" card. Many sellers include a previously used card, but those are worthless to you.

How can I improve my SD PQ?

A few people say that running a separate S-video cable to your TV from the receiver helps improve the picture quality. Of course, with the HDTivo, you need to switch the output resolution to 480i to get the S-video port active. I use only the HDMI cable to my Toshiba 51H94 (CRT based RPTV). I...

    Antenna question for HD Tivo

Pat, When you say "both inputs" are you referring to the OTA antenna input? If so, there is only one OTA input on the HDTivo. There are two tuners, but the signal is split internally. No need to split. If you want to send the OTA signal to another tuner (like your TV), then a splitter works...

Problem with HDMI on d* HD-DVR (newbie)

The cable included with the HDTivo is decent quality. I doubt that is the problem. Mine works fine. Could be your TV or a bad HDMI on the Tivo.

    Why such poor picture?

    Why such poor picture?

Bob, You don't have a clue who I am. I've been in the AV/HiFI business since 1988 in one form or another. Your not going to make a lot of friends around here with your bold type and know it all attitude. I told him to ignore what 4408 said because it was simply not possible for his TV. He...
