Having both, I would say the hopper is great but the genie is not that bad itself, giving the edge to the hopper. For me and I did say me, everything else like on demand, more HD stations, and the station I watch the most, directv wins for me!!
When setting your timers make sure you set it to record a few minutes before and a few minutes after. Yes, trial and error is the best way to learn but once you get use to it, it's a piece of cake.
If you have a tablet, smart phone, or a computer you can download the dish anywhere app or download a app called TV Guide and get your channel lineup. Hope this helps.
My friend kept telling me how great the hopper was and how the sling worked, like I said, the hopper is great. Then I asked myself the question, how much tv do I watch away from home, none. If you are one that travels a lot, go for the hopper with sling, you won't go wrong!!

I did the same thing only to switch back after 3 months. The hopper from dish is great but other than that, Directv has Dish beat, some would say different. Make sure Dish has the stations you watch.
If you do your research and math, Dish and Directv are with in few dollars of each other. Stay on top of your promotions ( when they end) and adjust to what's in your budget!!
I switched from Direct to Dish because a friend of mine has Dish and kept telling me about the hopper( by the way which is great), I switched only to find out that I lost about 3 stations that me and my wife watched, so to me the most important thing it boils down to is watching TV. From a price...
