    Dish Support?

Yes, there you go. I said "I'm fairly sure," but then someone said something that made me remember that it actually replaces it instead of adding to the pool. I acknowledged it. I'm still not sure why that deserved your snarky response, "Enjoy your DirecTV." I also never claimed that my prior...

    Dish Support?

Thanks, I will if I decide to go that route. I'm 99% sure I'm going with Dish. I never, ever want to deal with DirecTV's customer service again, it was the worst of any company I've ever dealt with. The couple of super angry, defensive and unhelpful guys on here make me rethink that...but then...

    Dish Support?

I never called you a liar, "pal," nor did I make a wise guy insulting crack. You can't point to a single instance of that. Don't blame me because you choose to be a douche. If I was your customer, I'd take my business elsewhere. I'm glad I'm not. Thanks to those that actually tried to help and...

    Dish Support?

I'm confused about this, because it's not what I've done, yet that's what you're implying. I never said I didn't believe anyone. In point of fact, it was Tampa who was the one who said exactly that ("never heard of that and I say that you're wrong."), even though he's actually the one that's...

    Dish Support?

But what difference does this make? You said, "Direct TV allows you to add an external hard drive and record to it? Never heard of that and I say you are wrong." However, it is literally true. You can add an external hard drive and record to it. I'm not sure why this is a problem for you...

    Dish Support?

Man, you seem really testy. I'm not sure what put you on the defensive, but I'll try to answer your snarky post seriously. I know you didn't say other services couldn't do it; I was simply saying that every other service DOES do it, so it is, in fact, normative, whereas Dish's practice is...

Yeah, all good points. Thanks for the input.

    Dish Support?

Cool. I just talked with DirecTV's customer support, and asked them a few of the same kinds of questions. Yes, it will pick up where you left off, yes, the hard drive replaces and you can use up to 4TB. But I asked about getting a 2nd Genie, and she said it's an up front cost of $199, and the...

So, I'm assuming that with two Hoppers, each one has 2TB, correct? That seems like it may be a better way to go.

    Dish Support?

I get that. What is OITNB? I'm not saying redundancy is a bad idea, or that the option of transferring recordings isn't good to have...it absolutely is. I'm just saying, given the choice, I'd rather have an EHD add to my primary pool of recording space rather than supplement it. Both would be...

Well, at least we agree about that.

    Dish Support?

Cool. So, question to those who have one hopper and super joey...how often do you run into an issue where you run out of tuners to use? I understand that a huge percentage of DVR recordings are from the big 4 networks, so if they're all on one tuner, do you still run out of the others often?
  14. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

Yeah, I noted that earlier in the thread. Reading is hard. Also, I haven't decided for DirecTV yet (and given my prior experience with them, it's not likely now either). But with comments like that, it wouldn't surprise me if you did drive people away from the company you obviously prefer.

    Dish Support?

Yep, that's what I'm doing. I didn't know a lot of this before I got here earlier today, so it's been helpful. Unfortunately, I now have more on the "cons" list than I did when I got here too.
  16. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

Fair enough. I guess I just can't imagine a situation where I would need to preserve recordings for that long, outside of a DVR failure (which, again, raises other concerns).
  17. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

All of the things we've been talking about in this thread. Namely, the ability to be watching a recording (an in-progress one), switch to something else, and go back and have it remember your place; and the ability to add a hard drive to expand your available recording space.
  18. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

Ah, you know what, now that you mention it, I do remember that, because my wife had recorded a few episodes of something before I added the hard drive, and she couldn't access them with the hard drive plugged in. Still, I was able to add a 2TB hard drive and expand the space, and my...

    Dish Support?

    1. Not a matter of being or not being fixed. With DISH you never could be in the process of recording, leave the channel and come back to where you were, or leave the actual recording and come back to where it was. Only after the program is finished recording. If that is a huge deal get Direct...

    Dish Support?

I've had DirecTV, and I'm fairly sure that my esata drive added to the space, not just replaced it. But either way I disagree with your conclusion. If you plan on having a lot of receivers fail and having to have backups of all of your recordings, then it would, indeed, be a handy feature. But...

    Dish Support?

Each time you start it, or just once (when you set it up)?
  22. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

I think that's either old (from before I had DirecTV) or new (since I got rid of DirecTV), because when I had it, it would add to the pool. Either way, if I can add a 4tb drive and it replaces the 1tb drive, that's still better than 2tb.
  23. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

That seems like a lot of extra work. It might not actually be, in reality, but it seems like a wasted opportunity to not just have them all combine together as one pool of space.
  24. mbrown3

    Dish Support?

Every DVR I've ever used, when you add an esata hard drive, it just adds it to the pool of available recording space. If Dish doesn't work that way, I'll have to think hard about whether I want to go that route. I know they have 2TB out of the box vs 1TB for DirecTV, but I can add a 2TB drive on...
