Well, I have been reading up on conical feed horns, smooth and corrugated, and have made a few prototypes. I have posted pictures. Bottom line-- the smooth horns without scalar rings brought in no signal. I tried three different sizes. All no good. For kicks, I tried a homemade version...

From my research and experimentation with my mini BUD and C Band reception, f/D and placement of the scalar ring is very important. What is the f/D for your dish? What are dimensions for your waveguide? How far from the aperature of the waveguide are the C Band V & H probes? Maybe I can help.:o

My Progress--1.2M mini BUD and homemade horn Been studying US patents all weekend to teach myself enough of the scientific background and theory for this project. I am not a great fan of trial and error. There doesn't seem to be very much good scientific/lay literature out there on the subject...

Satcom1-- can you give me the different measurements you used? I have the software to create the funnel but I am not sure of the proper dimensions. My waveguide is 65 mm wide. :rolleyes: I have been reading and studying-up on this topic and have even reviewed several patents for feehorns...

1. How did you arrive at the values (other than the diameter of the lnbf)? 2. :confused:WHy did you use 5.150 GHz? The frequencies of the waves are mostly between 3.7-4.2 GHz aren't they??

This makes perfect sense to me, intuitively. Since obviously you get the strongest reflected signal at the center lnbf (excluding Torroidal DIshes), then the C Band lnbf would really need to be in the center for mini BUDs.

Please explain about rotating the lnbf 90 degrees--are you referring to the side lnbf? You lost me here, my friend...:confused::confused:

Pop--I went to the dollar store and bought some plastic cereal bowls. They fit the lnbf perfectly. :upI cut out the bottom of the bowl and lined the darn thing with aluminum foil. Results: 0 ---no reception at all:mad::mad: I then made an aluminum foil scalar ring to fit in the bowl...
