Leaving DirecTV, but no hard feelings... :)

After many years on satellite... first Dish and then DirecTV (switched when Dish had a falling out with MSG and I couldn't watch Sabres games).... I've gone back to cable. Really it kinda became a money thing. Combined cost for TV, internet, and phone was about $230 when I was on satellite. Now...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

OK... it's in. Tech had a really tough time getting tuning adapter recognized by Tivo Bolt units. And my house is wired all cat5e with a patch panel in the basement and a few special things done to that so... I had to help him get the phone portion up and running. Picture quality is excellent...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

Normally, I do exactly what you're saying as far as using my own equipment, but right now, I'm going to let them install their stuff and see how it goes (except for their DVR box.... don't want it... even though they're telling me I have to have it on premises). If I use their phone service, my...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

Thank you.... so... kinda getting used to them on OTA for a little while will be fine then. Will probably have to redo their network settings after TW does their install, unless TW will set the router up like my current Frontier router (IP, network name, etc) I have some devices on static IPs...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

Love the analogy! heheh.... ok so their box sits in a box in the wiring closet. Not sure if it's just plug-n-play, but I can always have them set it up and THEN put it away.... take it out and plug it in if needed for troubleshooting. The TiVo boxes should arrive Monday. The cable install isn't...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

It's really bizarre....to me... that they are telling me HAVE TO take their cable box even though I said I'll be using TiVo boxes. I don't have to USE their DVR.....I can leave it in a box in the basement...but I have to accept it. C'mon......that's bizarre

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

We like the HGTV, DIY, Cooking Channel... stuff like that. Can't get OTA. I looked at Sling and could probably get all the channels we want between OTA and Sling's $40 package. But.... how would I record Sling content? AND.... I'd lose my Sabres games. I dunno. I'm getting to the point where I'm...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

OK.... regarding watching cable content on the OTA Bolt... So the next question would be.... can she start a recording on the cable Bolt from the OTA Bolt? Not a huge deal except for convenience. Not sure if I'm saving anything by not hooking the second Bolt to cable. The cable card is like...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

Just thinking about this again.... cause that's what I do.... If wife wanted to watch.... oh... say... HGTV on the bedroom TV (which is the Bolt I was going to just hook up as OTA)... would she have to start it recording on the living room Bolt (connected to cable) and let it spool up a bit...

Thinking of switching to cable from satellite... questions

Ok, well.....here's what I've done..... Set up my cable install for 2 weeks out. This gave me time to order the TiVo boxes. I was told that if the TiVo boxes come real fast, I can call to have the install moved up. Preferred channel package (200+) channels., 50Mb/s internet, and their phone...

New to 4K. Dumb question incoming...

I just got off chat with Samsung tech support and they're telling me that the optical audio out port will deliver 5.1 digital audio to the AV receiver from the TV using any source that provides digital audio. So.... I guess I'll give it a go and see. I have to see how I have things hooked up...

New to 4K. Dumb question incoming...

So I just got this Samsung 4K TV. I'm looking at rearranging my AV connections and started looking at HDMI cables. There are some newer, very fast cables out there. 18Gb/sec. Made for 4K and (I think) 3D. I don't have 3D (Samsung UN50HU6950F) and I don't have any sources that output 4K. The TV...

    Just got a 4K TV and.... it's confusing.... :)

A LOT of TVs will only output 2-channel sound from a non-HDMI source.

Which BluRay player did you get and.... does it play CDs? I had always assumed that they all played CD, DVD and (of course) BluRay, but some of them don't say they play CDs in their description and/or specs

    Just got a Samsung 50inch 4k (6950)...new to me...

I got this TV kinda by accident. I actually went out to buy a 55 inch 6350, but the store I went to was out of them even though when I checked online before going... it said they had them in stock. Anyways... long story short, I came home with this 50 inch 4k 6950. SOOoooo glad I didn't get the...

    Just got a 4K TV and.... it's confusing.... :)

I saw a Samsung Bluray player that says "upscaling 4K". I'll need to look into more about what exactly that means. I know what upscaling is. Just.... need to learn more. It was I think $189. For now I'll just be happy with what a beautiful picture I've got with the content available :)

    Just got a 4K TV and.... it's confusing.... :)

Well... what happened actually was that my brother-in-law's old Sony 34 inch TV pooped out. (picture tube... old.... and holy cow heavy!). He's on Social Security and the wife said, "You've been wanting a new TV but had no real reason to get one." (Our Panasonic plasma was working fine) "So we...

    Just got a 4K TV and.... it's confusing.... :)

I'm not sure there's enough 4K content on DirecTV for me to go through all of the reconfiguring AND they'll charge me another $6 a month for the new RVU. I think I'll just hold off and look for other options. I don't even own a bluRay player yet. :) I have a DVD changer. The smart remote for...

    Just got a 4K TV and.... it's confusing.... :)

Just got a Samsung 6950, 50 inch. UHD 4K, yadda, yadda, yadda.... I called DirecTV and said, it's in my living room, connected to my HR-34, and I don't see any 4K programming availability. Nope... The Genie (HR-34) needs to be connected to a NON-4K TV. The new Samsung doesn't get connected to...

CE's for the Weekend of of 2.6

I think I've found a "pattern" to the list lockup. It seems whenever we scroll to a point where the list needs to display what's on the OTHER DVR ... it locks up. HR34 in living room. Bring up The List. If anything on that list is actually on the HR24 in the bedroom, the list locks up.

Post what DirecTV retention offered you!

If you switch to cable, aren't you still paying a lot? And I'm not trolling... I just keep looking at my bill and going, "We're really paying that much to watch TV?" Last time I called retention when my contract was up, I got one of my HR24s upgraded to an HR34. There was a $99 upgrade fee, but...

I can't remember... is there a way to add the channel logos to QuickTune? No channel logos in the guide either, but I can't honestly remember if they were there before or not :)
