Obviously, content is important. But years ago, when I switched from D to Comcast, content was about the same. Even today, based on what I watch, there's little, if any, difference between Dish, Com and D*. I'm surprised some do not care about ads in their guide. I guess that's why D*...

At least not yet. I disagree with Charper1, ads are annoying and with all other things equal, I'd choose the service without the ads. Certainly, its one of the things to consider when choosing a service. In fact, years ago I switched from Comcast just to get away from the annoying guide format.

Once in a while, the front panel light that turns on to indicate that a program is being recorded turns red. I notice this once a week or so, and it stays on for several seconds. What does this red light mean?

I've had the same problem over the years. Usually worst when a station has just started HD and seems to go away with time. However, I've had the problem several times in the last few weeks, and each time was able to fix it by pressing pause and then the play buttoms on my HR20 remote. I guess...

Just make sure it works before he leaves. Try recording two channels at once. If this is your first dvr, ask him to run you through it. They are amazing :)

D* installer installed mine to the side of the house. It's been my experience that the installer will want to do it as easily possible. Assuming a good line of site, it's easiest to mount from the ground than going up on a roof. I'm sure the installer will put the slimline wherever you want...

Sure you can mount it to a wall. I actually prefer to mount the dish where you can easily touch it. Especially in snow areas, it's nice to be able to clear snow and ice from the dish.
