    The End of VOOM?

Echostar to buy VOOM assets -WSJ Interesting story this morning at Wall Street Journal. CVC stock is up on the news that they are ridding themselves of it. My choice awhile back to go to Comcast has been going well as they started offering a two tuner HD DVR in my area. Still miss all the...

Yes, I live in Portland and got the same email. I'm not participating though.

Sunspot caused problems...bad timing 4 upload

Looks like Voom picked a bad time to upload new software as there was a wicked sunspot (Sunspot 652) problem the past few days: see Spaceweather.com for details. Also, I found you do not have to be targeted to get the new software. Both my boxes said N/A for targeting last night before I...

    VOOM projector users

Actually, I got Voom BECAUSE of my projector. Regular SD TV looks like crap when projected (even when upscaled), while HD channels look fantastic. Before I had Comcast with only a few HD channels so I was stuck watching DVD's. I'm using an Infocus LS110 with a 100" Stewart Firehawk Electroscreen...

    30" dish

Hi Walter. Yes I did read that thread. I'm not so sure a few degrees will help...we really need a Westerly bird at decent elevation. Also, it was my understanding that this additional lease would cover additional channels, not just a mirror? I'm willing to live with the breakups for a few more...

    30" dish

I'd really like to see whether you get a 30" dish. They would not send one out for me because of the angle issues here in the Pacific NW as I posted earlier. I got a 24" dish instead and still get massive rain fade. Even on the clear days, the best SQ I can dial in (after many hours on the roof)...

    Landline Required for VOOM??

Please, phone cables are cheap and there is nothing to get excited about. Besides, they aren't enforcing anything if you chose not to run one. My boxes have never been hooked up to a phone line and never will.

    trying to understand rain fade

Nice theory Ilya, only there were no leaves on those trees up until two weeks ago and I've had this problem for months! The branches and leaves no doubt cut my signal down, but standard rain fade drops me below the threshold.

    Golf channel was added today

Yes, and the fashion shows. LOL. Really though, that is a good point and one I overlooked. I do realize the sport is huge and desrves its own channel, but Voom should focus on adding only HD channels IMHO. Otherwise, they are just another Dish network.

Take a Photo Tour of the Voom Facility

You should have bought an Infocus projector, being right in your backyard and all. When I had a similar problem with my Infocus Screenplay, I drove down from Portland to bring it to them and they replaced a board and a power supply free of charge (despite being out of warranty). I had it back...

    Golf channel was added today

I'm not a golf fan either, but I caught a game in HD once and it was impressive. Golf in SD, could not be more boring. Like car racing or sex, it is much more fun to participate than watch. I think Voom just adds the golf and tennis channels because they are practically free. ESPN, of course, is...

    trying to understand rain fade

Jay, I've had my dish peaked by installers MANY times. I have a meter and do it myself as well. I also had a 24" dish installed (BTW, the new 24" does say Voom on it, an older one I had installed was just grey). Still get rain fade. Voom says 30"-ers won't work in our area due to aiming...

    VOOM Power level

You can buy a satellite signal meter at electronics parts suppliers. I picked up one for $20 locally and it is invaluable for aiming your dish. You just connect the meter between the LNB and the Voom box, loosen the bolts on the dish, and move it around until the meter maximizes. The meter I...

    trying to understand rain fade

Yes Walter, I've had a lot of problems. Last night the whole family gathered around to watch a show together and the pixellation was unbearable. Fine this morning though.

    Confused Voomer: Planning to terminate

Bah-Buy!... and don't let the door hit you on the way out. Is that convincing enough?

Where Is The Espn Announcement? Good Or Bad!

I had ESPN HD with my previous Comcast service. Of all the HD channels, it was the worst in terms of PQ. Their feeds are often in SD. Too bad, because their programming was some of the best. Despite a week or so of withdrawal symptoms, I hardly miss it now that I've switched to Voom.

    trying to understand rain fade

I, too, get rain fade. However, even on a good clear day my best signal quality reading is in the mid-80's. Techcop is right IMHO. The problem with rain is the density. A dense light rain is worse than a big-drop hard rain because the signal has to penetrate a larger volume of water. Dense rain...

Important tip for those going to larger dish

There were no charges for the larger dish. It's clear that Voom wants everyone to be happy so they will do what is required to be sure your signal is stable. They may opt to install 24" as standard in some areas just to keep costs down (minimize service calls). Darell: I'm in Portland too...

Important tip for those going to larger dish

The larger dish did indeed help. It is difficult to compare numbers since the software upgrade occurred between dishes (they have different scales) but I was unable to get a stable picture until the big dish was up. Now I'm running in the mid 80's for signal quality. They were going to test...

Important tip for those going to larger dish

No, there were 4 screws that allowed detachment of just the dish. Your existing 24" dish must have the correct length arm. It's when the 24"-er is bolted onto the smaller dish's arm that everything is out of whack. Anyways, mine was probably a rare incident, but worth mentioning.

Important tip for those going to larger dish

As mentioned in a previous thread, I have been having signal problems ever since my dish was swapped out for a larger 24' size. The only way I was able to get a good signal was by removing the LNB and temporarily taping it out about 2" from the arm. Today a new installer came out and replaced...

    Signal Increase This Weekend??

I can confirm the 30" dish testing. They are installing one at my house next week. I don't think it is necessary now that I temporarily fixed my 21"er, but they want to test it out. The customer service at Voom, particularly at corporate, is some of the best I've ever seen. Now if they could...

    Pet Peeves (Off topic)

I like it best when the DVD is two-sided, with each format on each side. It doesn't cost them much more to do this and everybody gets what they want (the distributors get less store returns to). My biggest pet peeve is when they release DVDs with advertising and trailers that are impossible to...

Are you signing up for PlayBoy HD

Both my wife and my girlfriend want it, but I don't think it's worth the extra $15. I have the Vavavoom package and feel it should really be a part of it. BTW, is it in HD?
