    SEC+ Again

A lot of SEC teams now start their season with what we might call the slaughtering of a sacrificial lamb. They get a nice warm-up game and an easy win to start the season on a positive note and I guess the little school gets some money and free publicity.

MAX unveiled (the new HBO Max & Discovery+)

Yeah, HBO via cable/sat will almost certainly come with the $15.99 HD ad-free tier. Can't see them automatically jacking up the cost of HBO on everyone's cable bill by another $4 per month, nor can I see them giving all those folks the $19.99 4K Max tier at no additional cost if HBO pricing...

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

The Paramount+ app (and tons of other apps) are available on DISH's new Android TV-based equipment: the Hopper Plus, Joey 4, and Wireless Joey 4. https://www.dish.com/features/hopper-plus/

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

Interesting. I suppose, then, that the Hopper is caching the internet stream, to allow for live TV pause and rewind, but Dish isn't allowing the stream to be permanently recorded to the DVR hard drive for whatever reason.

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

Here's how it works for DirecTV Stream. Note that they only allow you to change your home network four times in a 12-month period. https://www.directv.com/support/stream/article/KM1433086/

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

I'm not sure exactly how they do it, but streaming providers have ways of determining what is your home network. DirecTV Stream does it now and it looks like Netflix will do it soon as well.

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

Yes, it's possible that Dish would need to amend some/all of their carriage contracts with the various national and local channels to allow them to distribute them to customers over the internet in addition to via satellite. But assuming it could only be streamed to Dish hardware connected to...

Why doesn't Dish add online streaming?

I agree. Sling is definitely *not* a streaming version of Dish, as it has different (smaller) channel packages and is a cheaper, lower-feature service. Interestingly, a few of the channels that Dish offers, such as some of the HBO and Cinemax channels they added back a year or so ago, are...

    Disney Networks Dispute Recitifed

Just to clarify: there's a single ESPN app. That app is home to two things: the standalone ESPN+ streaming service (which you pay ESPN directly for, or pay through your app store such as Apple, Google, Roku, Amazon, etc.) as well as "TV everywhere" streaming from the ESPN cable channels. To get...

    Disney Networks Dispute Recitifed

Oh, I think it's been way above 50 million for a long time. Cable TV penetration has been in decline for about a decade now and it's down to only about 50% of households per MoffanNathanson. The US has about 128 million households now, so that would put the number of subs at about 64 million...

    Disney Networks Dispute Recitifed

When my parents switched from DISH to YTTV last year, it was also my perception that the picture quality was overall better on YTTV. It's generally sharper and the colors look a bit purer and punchier than on DISH. That said, be warned that it can vary quite a bit from channel to channel and...

Pretty sure that will be the way it works by, say, 2026. Maybe a little sooner.

    Disney Networks Dispute Recitifed

Eh, DISH still has about 8 million subs, which ranks it as the 4th largest MVPD in the nation behind Comcast (17 m), Charter (15 m) and DirecTV (14 m across Sat, Stream and Uverse TV). So I'd say they're more than a blip.

    Disney Networks Dispute Recitifed

There are four major streaming cable TV services that carry a broad range of channels, including locals: YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, DirecTV Stream, and Fubo TV. The cloud DVR for all of them gives you unlimited storage but the recordings expire after 9 months *except* for Fubo TV. Fubo TV's...

    NextGen TV

Wow, nice, I didn't realize that the Flex 4K could run HDHomeRun's DVR service without involving an external computer or NAS as is necessary with the DVR services from Channels and Plex. Are you sure that the USB hard drive must be powered on its own rather than being able to draw power...

    NextGen TV

No ATSC 3.0 tuner that can plug in via USB has come to market. There are only two external 3.0 tuner devices I'm aware of. One is from HDHomeRun. Actually they have more than one device with ATSC 3.0 tuners. Their Flex 4K just has tuners while their Scribe 4K has tuners plus a built-in DVR...

    MeTV Removed from Dish

I know nothing about the guy, so I'm not accusing him of *knowingly* doing something wrong. Just saying that it looked sketchy on its surface and I figured it wasn't being done with Weigel's blessing.

    MeTV Removed from Dish

I wondered why Weigel was letting some rando get away with (unlicensed, I figured) online redistribution of their channels on Roku. Sure, those channels are just re-runs but MeTV ranked as the 23rd most-watched US TV network by Nielsen last year, ahead of Lifetime, AMC, FX, Paramount Network...

Channels that are included in Locals Only core package - Updated June 2022

A monthly bill of $25 per month to get your major locals in HD isn't too bad these days. I didn't realize that DISH even offered a locals-only package. If you wanted to get the basic locals-only package from Comcast as a standalone TV service (no other Comcast services like broadband), with the...

    Hopper 4(Is One Coming)??

Sure, makes sense. I'd say that Hopper Plus was designed as an add-on to the H3 in order to not have to scrap all those H3s. It's cheaper to keep those boxes in place and just add on the relatively low-cost Hopper Plus for those customers who can benefit from it (e.g. customers with home...

    Hopper 4(Is One Coming)??

For anyone looking at this thread which just sprung back to life, be aware that there is no Hopper 4 on the way. Instead, DISH is in the process of rolling out a new accessory to the Hopper 3 called the Hopper Plus. The Hopper 3 plugs into the Hopper Plus, which itself connects to the TV via...

    MeTV Removed from Dish

Yep. And we get it in 720p HD here via OTA, which is nice. In lots of places, MeTV is just SD.

    Hopper Plus new hardware??

Again, you have to divide the fixed costs of any additional DBS sats (build, launch, uplink/downlink) among the dwindling number of satellite customers over the remaining number of years that the service will even be offered. My guess is that the whole thing shuts down around 2030 as demand for...

    Hopper Plus new hardware??

I suspect that Dish is bluffing, making noises that they're considering launching additional DBS sats, in order to strengthen their negotiating position with AT&T for their eventual inevitable merger with DTV. AT&T, of course, knows the expected lifespan of Dish's current sat fleet, so they know...
