    NASA Mandatory HD Upgrade?

NASA does a whole hell of a lot more than shuttle. And it's not all "government waste." NASA does a lot, and while like any government program it does have inefficiencies, it's invaluable. Look at today's announcement about Mars. Some sort of liquid is flowing on Mars, and there's a chance...

    Receivers in the basement????

Any custom installed system with centrally located components is not going to use the OEM remotes. So don't worry about the RF remotes. That's when you use an RF universal that communicates with an IR base station.

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Oh yeah, I know that for sure, I have my BluRay player, etc, connected to the internet at my house. Lots of nice features. But this household will never use it. They are both ~70 years old, have used a DVD player about 5 times in the past 5 years, and have no desire to do anything more advanced.

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Hmm, you can just cancel it after a month? Then will definitely get it, try it out, and see if it gets used. Definitely can get a phone line to one receiver without an issue. Will it still ping the SD ones though? If not, can put the extra HD receiver in that room for the time being anyway...

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

At least 3 out of 5 phone lines won't be a problem...and 4 out of 5 should be possible, as I could get one run to the one room. But the one receiver is on an interior wall in a room with no basement or crawlspace under it (concrete floor under the carpet), and a second story above it (so no...

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Thanks, will have to toy with the receiver settings. I know that one IR remote can be used on multiple receivers, trying to accomplish the other way around though. Control one receiver that is in a different room than the TV.

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Cool, will likely do that then. Actually thinking about doing 3 HD receivers as the cost and hassle of doing IR repeaters helps equalize the cost between the free SD receiver and the $99 HD receiver. One question though, is it possible to either disable MRV or block DVR'd programs from that...

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Thanks. Is the additional HD receiver free? When building online it seemed to be $99 for the second HD receiver...maybe I clicked the wrong things. (Edit: OK, see it now, if I check multi-room DVR I get the second HD receiver free.) If that's the case, it's likely worth it for $3/month...

(Likely) switching from Dish Network - have questions

Writing this post to help a close relative switch from Dish to DirecTV. They are fed up with the lack of MSG at this point in hockey season, as well as the LIN TV dispute and multiple equipment issues lately that Dish is giving them a tough time about. It’s been a few years since I...

    Telefutura in Buffalo or Cleveland

That's weird, because Buffalo doesn't have an OTA channel for that network.

URGENT: I NEED HELP! Coax cable is ruined!

You can strip the cable just fine with a razor blade. Then grab a twist on end for 80 cents or whatever and you're all set. Compression fittings are stronger and much quicker/easier to make, but you should be fine with the twist connector. I used them for years until I decided it wasn't worth...

Dish Network to Direct TV Install Question

[/LIST] Not true. There's still only two tuners. So you can record one channel and watch another in the same room, or record one channel and watch a different in a different room. Or watch a recorded show while recording two and/or watching a different channel in a different room. You can...

    Neighbor taking satellite signal??

But you're not permanently attaching the bike. The way I always understood it, if something is attached to the building or structure, then it essentially becomes part of it, unless specifically excluded by the contract. Thus, if you hang a ceiling fan in your apartment, that fan stays when you...

    Neighbor taking satellite signal??

I prefer to see apartments with one common dish and feeds to each apartment...it kills me to see millions of dishes scattered across balconies. If, however, the dish is in your exclusive area, then I agree, they shouldn't use it to feed someone else. Pictures would definitely indicate whether...

    Hurricane Gustav...Satellite on roof?

I'd try to do what Larry said. If you look at your dish, you'll see that there is a sleeve-type attachment on the back of the reflector (big curved thing) that attaches onto the top of the mast. Take a sharpie and draw a line or two straight down the attachment of the sleeve and mast. Then...

I wouldn't call that output perfectly good then.

Moving (yes, really)...any promotions on receivers?

Yeah...current promotion is free Starz and Showtime for 3 months...they don't really care about that and it doesn't make it less expensive. I don't know if retention will work as well when your under contract (although we're about ready to break it).

Moving (yes, really)...any promotions on receivers?

I have a friend who is moving...right now they have an H20 and a D11. They will need another H20 or H21 and HR20 or HR21 for their new TV's. If I understand correctly, they will need to pay $200 for the HR20(1) and $100 for the H20(1). Plus they would want the OTA tuner if it's an HR21 so...

2 physical seperate locations, 1 contract

It violates your contract, but it is technically possible. Just don't call a tech out to the other house, or to the main house when the one receiver isn't there!

Looking for input on DirectTV service in Buffalo, NY

Buffalo OTA's are pretty strong and reliable. An amplified indoor antenna is all that most people need. You can grab CBC in HD if you try hard enough. You'll need a decent UHF antenna and preamp (outdoors, obviously). A CM4228 with a CM7777 should work. Other than that, not too much to grab...

    Directv 24 month Commitment?

Yep. There's no way around it with D* that I know of. Dish you can pay $50 upfront to avoid the commitment.

just made the switch to direct- Need tips on setup

Is there a "native" mode? Best thing to do would probably be let the box output the native res of the channel and let the TV do the scaling.

    HD Install Questions

Some of the newer DVR's have RF remotes I think...you could also get an RF universal remote. I think you can install your own D* if you get all the receivers at a lease fee from Best Buy or the like, as well as the dish. However, they're still D* leases and you're still under contract.
