Does DirecTV offer 4:3 aspect ratio standard definition service?

Dish has already switched to MPEG4 (at least on Eastern arc where I am). SD works fine and looks good zoomed. Most SD content is now 16:9 so you won't miss anything zoomed. You'll be letter-boxed on a 4:3 TV. It's time to spend a few hundred dollars on HDTVs. Even if you only subscribe to SD on...

    Is rain fade getting worse

You can't see inside clouds with the naked eye. Trust me, it's the columns of rain inside clouds that attenuate signals. Thunderstorms can have a very significant rain water column before expelling rain to the ground. That's why we use radar in aircraft to avoid the turbulence from thunderstorms...

    Is rain fade getting worse

I sure do! Huge columns of water droplets in the form of rain and hail. Don't argue about the structure and content of thunderstorms, weather radar, and signal attenuation with an experienced pilot. It is the column of rain (not hail or vapor) that both reflects and attenuates signals.

    Is rain fade getting worse

No, it's rain fade. Liquid water in the form of rain drops attenuates signals from satellites. If you doubt me you should take a short course in weather radar. Believe me, I Have 37 years of aviation weather radar flying experience, both C band and X band. If you have a weather radar app on your...

    Is rain fade getting worse

Thunderstorms between you and the satellite cause fade. It does not have to be raining at your location. I see you're in CT, the recent storms have been streaming up from the SW with monsoon like rain density, one after another, causing more interruptions than usual. Relax, nothing has likely...

No longer with DirecTV anymore, Dish was installed today.

The sour grapes from those with the less capable DVRs that have never experienced the capable and versatile Hopper3 is very entertaining. :biggrin

New Guide UI now rolling out (plus HDR support!)

Believe me it's the column of rain between the dish and the satellite. I am sort of an expert from 37 years of using X band and C band weather radars in airliners. If it's a tall column (thunderstorm) it can affect your signal at some distance from your house.

What's with all the Direct TV negative reviews?

If Sunday Ticket and certain RSNs are important to you go with DirecTV. If not, you absolutely can't beat the Hopper3 at Dish, 16+ tuners (PTAT and available 2 OTA), 4k and PIP from the box and external HD archiving tied to the account, plus 4k clients. Still have caller ID. Scott, who runs this...

Directv to air Olympics in 4K on 106.

Silliness! It's playing reruns while the guide says "Off Air".

Directv to air Olympics in 4K on 106.

Dish is offering the 4k Olympics also staring at 2PM. The feeds are the same. Neither Dish nor DirecTV has any control over it.

Directv to air Olympics in 4K on 106.

NBC paid a ton of money to carry the Olympics. To watch live you need to watch ads. Just be thankful that the ad free delayed UHD is available at all.

    Caller Id & new software

Over on the Dish threads, I see that you can also get Caller ID on a Hopper with a cell phone.

    Caller Id & new software

I seem to recall that Dish had a way to use Caller ID with VOIP. I use a land line so I never paid close attention.

New Genie UI now in CE testing

Dish put a simple method of picture adjustment in their menu for those that have TVs doing overscan (out of the box or set). It's a feature for seeing all of the guide. I don't need it because I use dot for dot to get sharpest picture, but my Hopper3 installer pointed it out as if I were "the 80...

New Genie UI now in CE testing

My point was why is overscan an issue? And, why If ALL TVs can adjust overscan and left/right/up/down? I guess Dish just put the feature in there for the fun of it...

New Genie UI now in CE testing

1080p (and 4k) TVs don't do overscan if set to dot for dot (or brand equivalent). Don't Genies allow you to fit the picture to the screen on lower resolution TVs, a feature of the Hopper line.

    HS-17 Question

Just pointing out that dealing with multiple servers can be easily accomplished.
  19. patmurphey

    HS-17 Question

That should be no problem. At Dish, with multiple Hoppers (servers to Joeys), you can link the any of the Joeys to one or the other Hopper. You can see and play all recordings but can only set timers on the linked Hopper. Rebooting a Hopper only affects the linked Joeys.

    HS-17 Question

If YES matters, your stuck with DTV's rules. With the Hopper3 you can have 211/Wally on the account for tailgating/cabin. An external HD can be added for DVR function.

Is there a DVR/ Gene upgrade in the future?

It isn't so much the tuners or hard drive capacity because of EHDs, but my wife has pushed us close to 200 timers a few times, and physical redundancy wouldn't hurt, either. Multiple Genies, and/or HS17s, would really be useful.
  22. patmurphey

Is there a DVR/ Gene upgrade in the future?

Well, you can now have 32 tuners. Dish just started authorizing 2 Hopper3s on an account on a request basis. :biggrin

    HS17-100 (For those wondering)

Exactly. I use a Harmony to operate the Hopper3. Hopper remote updates once a week, but if you are doing an upgrade, you can trigger one at the last minute.
  24. patmurphey

    HS17-100 (For those wondering)

Dish keeps updated timers and settings in the remote. When you upgrade a receiver, or replace one, you just download from the remote (along with recordings downloaded from an EHD).

    HS17-100 (For those wondering)

Not really watching all that, but it keeps returning seasons, etc., covered with zero hassle.
