Help me simplify the various ways to watch shows online (Roku, Apple tv, ect.)

Hook a computer to your tv and use torrents.

    Google Nexus 7 Tablet

Nope. Still makes no sense. Other than a some apps and games, I don't think there is a single piece of content available to ipad and Fire users that is not available to Android users... and vice versa.

    Google Nexus 7 Tablet

    That makes no sense.

Android tablet advice *Need a keyboard cheap

For podcasts I use Google Listen. My stock file manager really sucks so I use one called "File Manager", I think?! And BS Player for playing videos and accessing the network share folders (for media) quickly.

How long should a laptop battery last until replacement?

Agree. Leaving it plugged in for long periods seems to really bring down a battery's lifespan. Also, sometimes these aftermarket batteries, which get a bad rap, can outperform the manufactures. Anyway, replacing the battery once per year seems too frequent. This laptop doesn't have Vista on...

    Avast, AVG, and MSE

Linux is very well protected on it's own. Antivirus software for Linux has much more to do with protecting Windows computers on the same network or where a Linux server is used. The fact that a virus written for Linux has never been widespread or catastrophic is telling, especially considering...

    Avast, AVG, and MSE

I've never found it takes much time or effort. A growing GRUB menu can be annoying, I guess. Preference, I guess.

    Avast, AVG, and MSE

I think they are all very good. There's another thread going about Norton... I don't know why anyone would pay for antivirus software these days but to each his own. However, I think the best way to go for someone with even a basic understanding of their PC is to install a Linux distro...

NY Times: On Monday Microsoft will unveil their own tablet, will take on the iPad

Don't forget about the Nook and Barnes & Noble... and the rumors are swirling that Microsoft and B&N are teaming up on this tablet with some kind of Xbox feature set. We'll see tomorrow.

Opinions of Norton 360 vs Adaware

When I used Windows, I also did the Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials combo. Never a problem. But if that's your choice, I wouldn't think Ad-Aware is as full featured as Norton. Depends on the specs of your PC as well. Norton was always a resource pig and could slow down the PC so...

Best free DNLA server for a Mac?

I use uShare, but I'm on Linux. I believe it's available for Mac, as well.

Would you recommend buying a Touchpad?

In a couple of months the Asus Memo comes out. It's supposed to be $250 with ICS and have pretty good specs. With the prices of full-fledged tablets dropping so fast, I can't see the point of buying a nook color or hp touchpad unless, like the guy above, hacking and modding are interesting to...

Did you get your 3rd gen iPad engraved?

From the title, I really thought this thread was just to goof on people who go crazy for the ipad. I had no idea you people (apple people) engraved your devices. I'm shocked.

    Missing file on windows xp.

Funny. I was going to suggest that a registry cleaner maybe caused the problem. I have no familiarity with Readon, but one thing I can think of would be to uninstall using Revo and then re-install fresh.

    mallware

All viruses are malware. Not all malware is a virus. Difference Between Malware and Virus | Difference Between So, the difference between the software is what it's looking for. I use Linux exclusively and don't think much about it anymore, but I'm fairly certain most anti-virus software comes...

    Helpful file transfer tool

I found this little utility, Dukto, some time ago. It has been endlessly useful to me so I thought others might like it, too. From the site: "Dukto is an easy file transfer tool designed for LAN use. I use it in my everyday work to transfer files from one PC to another, without worrying about...

Need schooling on Android and my home network.

I can't speak to the television, but I use BSPlayer Lite to stream (not load) movies from my network to my android phone. It is free and works great.

Need an Xbox 360 without the gaming aspect! Need my fellow nerds' help!

I use an older Dell laptop with a broken screen for similar purposes. In another room, I ran 50 ft of hdmi from the LR to BR so I can use the one 360 in either room. Also, I think a home brewed Wii would work and be less expensive.

Yeah, all the buntus are probably over 4gb now, but Watt should be just fine with it. Let me know how it goes.

    WattOS Linux distro

Just started using WattOS on my old eee pc. It's a small, LXDE distro, very much like Lubuntu... Anyway, it has been phenomenally fast and efficient on this old netbook. I wanted to give it a mention here in case anyone's looking for something similar.
