Turner Networks Removes Channels from DISH as Contract Deadline Passes


ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH) announced that Monday night Turner Networks removed Boomerang, Cartoon Network, CNN, CNN en Español, HLN, truTV and Turner Classic Movies from the DISH programming lineup. The two companies have been unable to negotiate the terms of a renewed distribution agreement, and Turner refused to extend the overall agreement.

"In the past year, DISH has successfully renewed agreements with many large content providers," said Warren Schlichting, DISH senior vice president of Programming. "As a result, we are confident that we have offered a deal to Turner that reflects an appropriate value for our customers."

Good thing I've already recorded all the Forensic Files that are being aired now.

And my daughter has shifted from watching the TOON networks to watching Doctor Who on Amazon Instant Video.

At least we get to see what companies own what channels in their extortion attempts.

Looks like they're subbing near equivalent channels for the dropped ones. Some old B&W movie on TCM, news on CNN, etc. I watch TCM occasionally but I watch TNT and TBS quite a bit so I hope they keep those on.

Dish did what they legally HAD to do, as their contract expired, and turner did NOT extend it. It was turner that forced the shutoff.

Their corporate site is spinning things.

If Dish had kept them on, without a contract, they could be sued.

Don't fall for that. As Ler points out DISH has no alternative. It's rare (though not unheard of) that DISH or any carrier is the one to take channels off in a dispute, it's most always the owner of the channels in this case Turner.

It isn't always both to blame either. We may never know the details, but generally it's business, possibly there is no blame, each side has different interests. Like a Union strike, pulling stations is the biggest weapon the content provider has. I don't even agree it's the subscriber who loses - they may actually win if the cost of a subscription doesn't go up as much had DISH not negotiated so hard.
