Help is on the way for businesses that need to assess their Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capabilities prior to buying an enterprise-class telephony system.

Apparent Networks is poised to launch an enterprise-grade version of its AppareNet Voice technology, a set of tools designed to identify faults associated with data and voice networks.

Networks Unprepared

"Analysts have reported that 85 percent of enterprise IP networks are not ready for VoIP," said Matt Dion, a marketing executive with Apparent Networks. Among the issues impacting the adoption of Internet phone services are call latency, network congestion and packet loss, he said.

Enterprises thus need predeployment assessment and continuous monitoring of IP systems as they encounter changing traffic patterns in the network pipeline. According to Dion, they also need the ability to do quick fixes on problems as they arise. AppareNet is designed to address all these issues.

The tool consists of a server, a Web-based user interface and sequencers located in data centers or at key locations around a network. The system can test up to 250 concurrent calls.

Proactive Approach

For organizations operating converged networks for voice, data and video transmissions, voice communications frequently suffer because they are more sensitive to traffic loads, Dion said. Voice communication is further affected by improper network configuration or faulty switches or routers.

"Our technology examines voice and data traffic, and how they impact each other," Dion said. "We do predictive evaluations based on network measurements that examine the data packets." And because AppareNet Voice provides agent-free testing, it can test components including wide-area network links, handsets, clients and servers, he added.

While enterprise VoIP deployments are growing, some businesses are reluctant to jump on the bandwagon because of quality-of-service issues. "This product addresses that concern by providing a tool to monitor network status and traffic levels," said Yankee Group senior analyst Taher Bouzayen.

AppareNet Enterprise Voice is targeted at carriers, VoIP equipment vendors and service providers. It costs $170,000 and will be launched officially next week.
