AT&T Inc. has upped the transmission speed of its DSL broadband services, officials said Monday.

The new DSL service, currently sold as SBC Yahoo! DSL Expert Plus, is a broadband service that up to doubles the bandwidth of previously available DSL offerings from the former SBC companies, with downstream speeds of up to 6 megabytes per second and upstream speeds of up to 608 kilobytes per second.

The new Expert Plus DSL package is available for qualifying business customers for an introductory rate of $49.99 per month.

AT&T competitor Cox Communications recently announced an increase in download speeds of its fastest Cox High Speed Internet package to 9 Mbps. In a news release, Cox said it was boosting the speeds by 80 percent for subscribers to its Premier Internet Package. The Cox Premier package is available to customers for $54.95 per month or as low as $29.95 when bundled with digital cable and telephone services.
