"The detectives in the Los Angeles Police Department's Major Crimes division are still reeling from the departure of Brenda Leigh Johnson and the realization that Captain Raydor is now in charge. Unlike their previous chief, Raydor is determined to lead the department with a more team-oriented approach, sharing the credit with the people with whom she works. Raydor's hardest job, however, will be gaining the full trust and confidence of her detectives, who aren't quick to forget her long history of internal investigations targeting them and their previous boss. Especially troublesome is Provenza, who has a difficult time taking orders from someone he doesn’t think knows as much as he does."

Offhand it looks like the many of the same cast from The Closer are returning to this show (if you view the TNT website). However, IMDb.com shows that 7-episdes have been recorded and I don't see many of the same faces. We see, I suppose.

In theory the show should be a success...however, I'm not sure people will be quite so "keen" in their acceptance of Capt. Raydor. I don't think the new show will miss Gabriel or Pope. I'll miss Taylor...he was source of continuous amusement. We shall see.

Glad to see that there will be a continuation of this series albeit in a different form. Writers have "softened" the Capt. Raydor role, so I think that will work as this spinoff goes forward. Getting off track a little, I think that TNT has really come up with some very good series over the last few years.

No amount of writing will ever soften that mug....she needs to visit Greta Van Susteren's plastic surgeon. ;)

Meh! At some point, Raydor is going to have to start throwing "the book" away, or it will be an uncomfortable dynamic between her and the rest of the team...except for kiss a** what's her name. I had set a timer, but deleted it after I watched last night's.

Same cast, different dynamic...I fell asleep while watching. Fortunately, this was the pilot episode so the writers and producers have time to make changes. Unfortunately, they will have to go back to the formula that made The Closer so successful, and I'm not sure Raydor can play the "Brenda Lee" role...or if the viewing audience will tolerate a replacement. We shall see. I'll give it a half-dozen episodes to see if they win my heart and mind.

They (TNT) should have let the show END. Mary can't carry it further.

I actually enjoyed Major Crimes and will give it some time to develop and get used to the very different tone of the show.

Yeah, it isn't the same, but who could have expected it to be?

Yep, I'm sure some of the backlash deals with the fact that Major Crimes is The Closer (80% of the same cast) with a much different feel. I'll give it some time to develop and see where this show goes...

Before and After: 20 Aug 2012 (Monday, 9:00 PM ET)

"The division works to obtain justice in a brutal homicide; Raydor struggles to gain her colleagues' respect; Provenza contends with changes in the department."

It sounds like this episode should really "hit home" with the new and improved/subdued version. Provenza has been the most vocal critic of the reorganization. Of course, isn't he 10-years past retirement? Speaking of retirement...there is a well-seasoned cast of officers on Major Crimes.

    Capt. Raydor (60)
    Lt. Provenza (68)
    Cmdr. Taylor (58)
    Lt. Tao (62)
    Lt. Flynn (63)

Umm....as long-time The Closer fans my wife and I are scratching out heads wondering what we're watching. Even my daughter say, "I don't like this show." If this show doesn't improve (I really don't like the "let's reach settlement" angle nor the constant bickering) in the next four episode I'm deleting the timer. Now that would be a major crime.

After watching the 2nd episode, I think I'll keep it in my timers. While it is very much a different tone, I am enjoying it.

Frankly, while I did love the Closer, I was getting tired of Brenda and her constant whines and always making everything about her.

I agreed, I was getting tired of Brenda Lee's battles with her personal demons and the department. Sure, they had to lay the foundation for her departure... but the season long drama was a bit much.
