I was just at the book store thumbing through a copy of Sat. Internation and WOW are we ever on the short end of the FTA stick here in the states. They have Hundreds and Hundreds of channels. I did some a few really cool products u=in that issue. Wonder if FTA will ever catch on with that kind of gusto??

I know what you mean I just got back from Iraq and there was more FTA channels there then here in the states. I think it is because we are stupid enough to pay to watch commercial tv.

FTA is virgin territory here, but has so much potential.

What it needs is a dedicated (FTA) major network that could work with advertisers to reach as many people possible, this would also work great for Las Vegas or Orlando which spends lots of $$$ on tourism ads.

I could see The Las Vegas Channel being something Big, imagine informative programming on Casinos, Clubs, Night Life, Entertainment, even How to's on betting tables and Poker for all those intimidated by gaming.

PBS gets quite a bit of subsidies form your tax dollars, and I really like PBS programming, but lets face it were watching something that is transmitted for utility purposes, now if there was a National Parks channel for FTA that would be cool , I like that kind of stuff , informative, cultural, and definitely public interest.

Hopefully somebody with lots of money and big ideas sees the potential in FTA.

The magazine had a listing of what satellites were available and the channels on them. The list went on and on and on. Literally HUNDREDS.

I think it would be great if FTA became the place for real specialty markets, like an all horror movie channel, or all western, that kind of thing. I think if a peson was really into something like that they would be more likely to shell out the money for a box and dish. Give people something they can't get elsewhere and they will come running.

Gets me thinking...I wonder what would be involved in starting an FTA channel??
Anyone have any info??

What's really sucky is that some of the free stuff over in Europe is actually American originated signals that cost money to receive here in the states... :(

The problem here is the "pay-TV" system we have in place. Anyone that developes a TV network does so with a view that it wil be eventually be picked up by the cable & satellite systems. Thta's where the money is.

One problem with "selling" FTA may be the lack of numbers/demographics on FTA users. To "them" we are just a bunch of hobbyists with dishes-an unknown quantity. In Europe, FTA is integrated into their system.

Bottom line-people here will pay so they do.

One day the satellite/digital TV market will be saturated. Everyone who wants it will have it. It was at this point that the BBC, and BSKYB launched their FTA satellite service in the UK.

It will take some more time here in the USA but as soon as it becomes a viable money maker we WILL have a true FTA service here!

Until then FTA is on the most part not meant for us and we will continue to take what we get.............. and be happy with that :)

I agree, feeds of every sort (Inclding NEWS and LIVE Sports) are my MAIN interest with FTA!

Feeds are usually always in the clear! (Thank Goodness!)

I have seen some HORRIFIC LIVE feeds when I lived in Europe, some I will never forget :(

So what is involved with starting an FTA channel? obviously money, but just what else is involved? Who would you pitch to? How would you get a channel on G10 or some other american sat??
Anybody know?

I think it's a rented thing... a company owns the satellite and other companies rent the tps. I guess major news networks have cut big time deals, which is why they have so much access to random feed tps.
